I seem to recall hearing, a few years ago, about a major league
pitcher getting himself put on the Disabled List after he burned
himself while doing exactly that. (Caveat: he may have "merely"
been using the iron's 'steam' function.)
Also, somewhere on the net I once found a photo of a metal sign
that said, in black lettering on a yellow background:
CAUTION:
THIS SIGN HAS
SHARP EDGES
It looked real but of course it could have been a Photoshop job.

John Smoltz, no less.

Calls to mind Vince Colmean vs The Man Eating Tarp.
I'm guessing there's a good long list of strange injuries
which have waylaid athletes.

Nah, Coleman simply wasn't paying attention and got caught from
behind.
Some of the later injuries that damaged Cardinals post season chances
required more active involvement, like Jack Clark trying slide into
first base, or Mike Matheny slicing his hand open. Others have called
it the Curse of Keith Hernandez:

Now that the Cardinals have won in 2006, I can take it more
philosophically.

He doesn't say what really happened. Maybe he was trying to wash his
truck while it was running.
