True. But I'd like to point out that how "stuck" the average person is
is as dependant on the society in which he/she lives than it is on
choices made by the individual himself. (offcourse staying in that
society is to some degree a choice too...)
For example, if you live in a country with high unemployment, low
salaries, bad and/or nonexistant childcare and no universal healthcare
it is quite hard to become independent from your employer.
If you live somewhere where there is universal healthcare, good wages
and a near-zero unemployment-rate, along with good enough and plentiful
enough childcare that both partners can easily work if they want to,
then it is very VERY easy to become reasonably independent.
