It's not that hard to avoid Vader's anger. (1) Don't question his
abilities, (2) don't bring your fleet out of hyperspace within
sensor range of the enemy, and (3) don't tell him you've nearly
accomplished your mission while there's still a risk of failure. If
you avoid these elementary mistakes, advancement is assured.

There are downsides to working for him other than his anger.
Not least of which is having your workplace repeatedly blown
to smithereens.

Well, admittedly that's the fault of the terrorists. And most of
those working for him ARE in the military or intelligence services,
which kinda have standard risks associated with them.
