face at one point) and she wanted the opportunity to be free of him.

Possibility #2 - It was a plan between her and the Master all along as
a way of preventing him from being captured, hence her taking the ring

I agree. Because SHE shot him and not anybody else there is now way of
knowing WHAT type of bullet was used. It may have been of special design
that contained drugs that would slow down the Masters heart rate etc and
make him APPEAR dead so as to escape detection. This would also explain why
he was pretty desperate NOT to regenerate. I have no doubt she was in on
this with him. As for the ring itself I haven't yet worked out its
significance but I'm sure it will be crucial to restoring him.
