Cribbins and Palmer were excellent, as expected, but their cameos didn't rescue the show, which surprised me by being worse than last year's effort. Kylie Minogue apparently can't act at all. Her character was by far the least interesting of the supporting cast. On the other hand, David Tennant can obviously act very well, but I'm finally convinced that he's hopelessly miscast. I can imagine big mpments, such as his "903 years old" speech, working quite well with any of his nine predecessors. Instead I laughed at him. He had one brilliant moment: the little "take me to your leader" joke. The writing, direction, settings, special effects and music were all dull. I don't usually notice the music, but there wasn't much else of interest to distract me from it, and it consisted of nothing but clichés apart from one wildly OTT "Big Tune". The "hosts" were surprisingly shoddy: the brief visual fanwanky reference to Robots of Death was ill-advised, considering how much better the robots looked in the older story. Poking fun at the Queen is so daring and clever, isn't it? Well no, it isn't, actually. It's boring, like everything else in this childish runaround. McCoy didn't characterise the Doctor as an unlikeable tit, and was quite good as being quietly serious. As an example of what an unlikeable tit this Doctor is, consider that the only death he regretted was the death of the bint he snogged. >> The writing, direction, settings, special effects and music were all >> dull. The music reflected this. I quite enjoyed it. It was just so very generic and dull. "This is an action scene, so we'll have some action music. This is a sentimental scene, so we'll have some sentimental music." I prefer even the ear-splitting rubbish music in The Silurians, because at least the ear-splitting rubbish music is used in an attempt to add extra meaning to the story instead of merely duplicating what can be seen and heard without it. Once, DW pushed boundaries. Now it just pushes buttons. Now it's just a feel-good experience that never challenges the viewer to use his or her brain. No wonder it's almost as popular as soap opera. >> The "hosts" were surprisingly shoddy: the brief visual fanwanky >> reference to Robots of Death was ill-advised, considering how much >> better the robots looked in the older story. >> >> Poking fun at the Queen is so daring and clever, isn't it? Never mind posters on buses, there were trailers in the _cinema_ this year. I know it's an unprecedented success, and mostly quite good, but it could still be so much *better* (and still get all the viewers) if it didn't reek of smugness. > Let's hear where you think he's gone wrong > so far. His insistence on trying to make everything bigger and more impressive than the previous time around. Witness the increasing size of the swarm of bad guys in each series finale, requiring a bigger magical reset switch to destroy them/put right all the devastation. How do you top that? Why, you bring in an even sillier number to do even more damage next time. I liked a lot of VotD, but I saw having the Earth being threatened as a symptom of this, and completely unnecessary. Is the viewing public really that self-obsessed that they won't find the fate of the ship and passengers interesting enough, and need six billion humans added to the potential body count to stop them from switching over? It all comes across as a very short-sighted way of maintaining interest. By focusing so much on "writing big pictures"[1], I suspect he's ignoring the big picture. There's also his fascination with reality TV, which usually manifests itself as those London-based family scenes. Astrid gave us all the background we needed, but we still got (i) scenes of a deserted London, that added nothing to the show (other than acknowledging that setting the Christmas specials there is getting silly and repetitive) and (ii) two stereotyped commoners among the stereotyped rich snobs (are we meant to identify with one group and deride the other?) [1] This interview explains a lot about why RTD is doing it this way (as well as his love of Big Brother). I understand, but don't always agree. http://news.independent.co.uk/people/profiles/article1919243.ece -- Remove caps to communicate more easily. Genesis of the Daleks: a safe family show that explored the ethics of genocide and presented a charismatic dictator with whose disabilities one couldn't help sympathising. Trial of a Timelord: The good guys are worse than the bad guys, and history really is written by the winners. The Mind Robber: Fiction, reality: what's the difference? Seriously what's the difference? Let's explore that question exhaustively. The Silurians: See those monsters that scared you out of your wits? Well, they're people just like you and me, or possibly a little better. Edge of Destruction: We don't need a budget to blow your minds. A pair of scissors will suffice. The Green Death: Maybe those smelly long-haired hippies have a point? It occurs to me that one of the problems with the new series is that nobody feels threatened enough by it to complain about it to the BBC. A lot of the old series was no better (much of the Letts and Williams eras, for instance), but the only complaints I've seem about the new series' themes have amounted to little more than that it's a bit too PC about homosexuality and race relations for some loonies' liking. Up to at least number 48 of the BF audios (the excellent "Davros" story, which is the most recent one I've heard), I think that the audio stories continue the boundary-pushing tradition better than the new TV stories. The new TV stories just don't take risks, with the sole exception of the earlier parts of Dalek and Love & Monsters, both of which show a rare willingness to encourage the audience to *think*. -- PJR :-) Peter J Ross 12-28-2007, 02:44 PM In rec.arts.drwho on Thu, 27 Dec 2007 17:40:43 +0000, The Face of Po <gkennington@claIrVOYaNT.coLD.DuCk> wrote: > I was hanging out with the cool kids in rec.arts.drwho when > Peter J Ross got out a spraycan and scrawled the following: >> In rec.arts.drwho on Tue, 25 Dec 2007 21:23:58 GMT, Stephen Wilson >> <stephen.wilson2004nospam@ntlworld.com> wrote: >> >> > >> > "Peter J Ross" <pjr@example.invalid> wrote in message >> > news:slrnfn2raq.491.pjr@pjr.gotdns.org... >> >> In rec.arts.drwho on Tue, 25 Dec 2007 12:52:10 -0600, John Pertwee >> >> <johnpertweeapww@yahoo.com> wrote: >> >> >> >>> I am out of here until I see it. >> >> >> >> I hope you were less disappointed than I was. >> >> >> >> Minor spoilers follow. >> >> >> >> . >> >> >> >> . >> >> >> >> . >> >> >> >> . >> >> >> >> . >> >> >> >> . >> >> >> >> . >> >> >> >> . >> >> >> >> . >> >> >> >> . >> >> >> >> . >> >> >> >> . >> >> >> >> . >> >> >> >> . >> >> >> >> . >> >> >> >> . >> >> >> >> . >> >> >> >> > [...] >> >> On the other hand, David Tennant can obviously act very well, but I'm >> >> finally convinced that he's hopelessly miscast. To me it seem like a great Christmas treat to have the Doctor (or any other extraordinary hero, undercover and out of place/era) finally get tired of circumspection and being deferential and just come out with it straight. I actually quite liked the moment and thought it was a nod to the fans who were expecting some sort story and/or subtle method to get the troupe following him; instead he literally rose to the challenge and shut up the twit. The biggest benefit for me of the new series is the increased release rate of classic DVD's. What was it this year, something like 17, we used to be lucky to get 7 a year. I find the new series can sometimes be very very good, such as HN/FOB and Blink, but when its bad its really really awful. It would have been more accurate if I'd said that I don't care whether it succeeds or fails, except insofar as it continues to attract new viewers who may buy DVDs of the original series. Once my DVD collection is complete, I'll no longer have a selfish reason for hoping for high ratings and cultural penetration. Oh, and its produced a moderately entertaining spin-off in Torchwood and an unmissable one in the Sarah Jane Adventures, but they might now survive on their own merits. At present I'm not particularly interested in watching any more New Who, which has become a kind of torture that I can't quite stop inflicting on myself. Perhaps Series Four will be so good that I change my mind; but I saw the trailer and thought "Surely these can't be *highlights*?". -- PJR :-) |
