G'day,

I've just watched the Xmas special...

I was VERY VERY pleased that when the Doctor tried to bring Astrid back,
he failed. I was sitting there saying to myself - PLEASE not another
"reset", or grand near-magical resurrection...

I know that there were plenty of episodes in the original series that
climaxed with a huge bang of some kind...

Warriors Gate, Caves of Androzanni, Time and the Rani, Deadly Assassin,
to name but a few...

But on the whole, I feel like things were settled more... bangless...
tripping Eldrad up with his scarf... tricking President Borusa...

Is the new series taking the easy way out too often?

Even my wife and father in law, whilst watching the special, commented
on how "easily" the Doctor could gather information from the Titanic's
computer network... This more goes back to my quibble with the Sonic
Screwdriver, becoming the swiss army knife of the new series - it does
EVERYTHING it seems, provided it allows the story to progress easily.

(Oddly enough, I didn't mind it popping the champagne - sound waves
could realistically do that...)

Coming off the back of the very religious and over the top S3 climax,
with a biblical resurrection and angelic flying Doctor, parts of the
special sent me back there (the angels flying him up to the bridge),
which I certainly didn't enjoy.

It's late, now I'm rambling, but really - new series - getting too OTT?

cheers

Yes, I think so. He's becoming very goddish. Been everywhere, knows
everybody. And he still reminds me of Timmy Mallett when he gets excited.

Is this as a result of the doctor being the only one of his kind?

The lack of equals to hold him accountable is one factor. The lack
of rules/codes for him to observe is another. In a way his defense
of humanity justifies his pomp, its just the way he expresses that
concern. So brash, when heroes of old, quietly went about the business
of saving the world without drawing too much attention to themselves.

In the old days you judge the hero by the reaction of those around
him, not by his vitriol. This doctor may be 900 years and knowledgeable
with it, yet the wisdom which should comes with that age seems to
have been transposed by his youthful persona. If only he played the
role so that he was older than his appearance. slower to react the
way an elderly person might arrive at a decision. less faced by the
moment, sure footed until it was necessary to show that he also
learns as we do.

I wonder what it is the other doctors had, which this doctor has
forgotten?
