View Full Version : Is there any way that I can...
Aaron 12-27-2007, 10:38 AM ....see the episodes of season 2 that have already aired?
Hi, I'm Aaron, new to the group but not to usenet [1], starting
watching season 1 on DVD 2 weeks ago. Held off posting until I
finished it.
At any rate, I want to fully catch up, but I don't know how I can do
it. They're not running them again on TV during the strike, AFAICT.
Can anyone help me?
I'm more than willing to buy/rent them when they come out, but they
won't until the season is over, right? I'm not trying to be cheap, but
instead trying to enjoy the show that I discovered too late!
Thanks!
Oh, and three questions, two possibly about season 2 (answer as
minimally as possible), and one general question. General question
first: why didn't Mohinder or the other heroes hack Sylar to bits when
they had the chance?! Argh!!!! Maybe Mohinder was still scared of him
and worried for Peter, but at the end of the season SOMEONE should
have made sure he was destroyed. Niki would have been good =D
I know, I know, have I read any comic books? Got it. He'll probably
save everyone in season 8.
Now for the other two: do we ever find out why guns seem to never
really affect Sylar? I mean, sometimes he stops the bullets, but other
times he falls down (episode 3, and also at Claire's house) as if he
were shot. But to Eden, he says "Now, you know that [gun] won't hurt
me." Is it a power he took? Yes/no is fine, or "it was just
telekinesis and non-fatal wounds" will do. =) [2]
The other: I take it we are going to meet the one Molly Walker is
terrified of, who can see her? Next bad guy? Again, just yes or no is
fine.
Thanks again!
Oh, I also had a problem with the final episode (well, another of many
problems) because ALL the heroes were near Peter and Sylar at the
end... Hiro hadn't changed enough of the past to make that happen
differently than it did the "first time through", so how were they
going to survive the bomb as they did the first time through?
From "Five Years Gone", Nathan, DL, Niki, Hiro, Matt Parker, Claire
and her dad...they ALL survived the bomb, but all but Claire, Nathan,
and Hiro wouldn't have except for Nathan acting differently "this time
through".
Does that make any sense at all? What I'm trying to say is, it was
poorly written. They couldn't have all been that near Peter the first
time through, or they'd be dead. But why would the first time through
have been different in that detail?
And you might wonder why I put "DL" on that list (since I haven't seen
as much of the show as you have), but Sylar had his ability 5 years
gone, and he didn't take it before the bomb, so...

[1] I come off as impossibly arrogant from time to time (maybe even in
this first post), but I'm really not. If I'm wrong, just show me and
I'll see it. I just thought I should get that out in the air ASAP. =)
It causes trouble sometimes.
[2] Oh yeah, and did he take Eden's power or not? They didn't mention
her head being cut off, but he seems to have her vocal skills from
time to time. Was he able to mimic it because of the waitress's
ability somehow?

The episodes should still be available at nbc.com, but only if you are
in the US.
Otherwise, you'll have to resort to torrents or other quasi-legal means.

Good question. The best answer is "convenience of the plot". Kring & co
love Sylar for some unfathomable reason, and wanted to keep him around.
The only other answer is that Mohinder was more worried about protecting
his butt and getting Peter out of the apartment than killing Sylar.
Mohinder showed an aversion to killing earlier, so that could also be
part of the issue.

At the end of the season, everyone had their own issues: Niki had Micah
and DL to worry about; Matt was shot; HRG was scheming to protect
Claire; Mohinder had Molly to worry about.

TPTB have said that he is just really good with TK.
People have speculated that he has picked up some kind of limited
invulnerability, but the answer really is not known.

Yes.

Actually, things were changed tremendously. The original explosion
occurred at around 11am on 11/08/2006. The actual explosion occurred
late on 11/07/2006.
Hiro's changes caused a domino effect - and that brought everyone
together in Kirby Plaza.

We don't really know all the details about the time line that would have
occurred should Future Hiro not have visited Peter on the subway.
It's not even clear that FHiro has all his facts correct. He was acting
based on what he could find in the historical record: newspaper events,
eyewitness accounts, etc. A lot of that record has been deliberately
distorted by various people for their own ends.
For example, he assumed that Sylar got Claire's power. However, she
could have survived Homecoming, only to be hidden by HRG, who also
planted stories of her death.
Similarly, Nathan perpetrated a cover-up of Peter's involvement in the
explosion by blaming Sylar.
FHiro could have easily been misled by these so-called facts. He's not
omniscient, after all.
So, yes, it's possible that the "original" time line was much different
than what we saw.

Sylar did not obtain Eden's power. Read the graphic novel "Fathers and
Daughters".
The distorted voice is just an effect.

Great! I should have thought of that.

Best way to protect Claire: make sure Sylar is dead.
I like your first answer. TPTB love Sylar.
Actually, I like him too...good bad guy.

Maybe one day he'll get good enough that he won't have to use gestures
as a crutch.
Or does he just do them to be cool? =)
Maybe he can use telekinesis to heal himself, in limited ways? Forcing
arteries/skin back together, etc?

Oh! You're right! Almost the entire season is based on that...and
future Hiro wouldn't know every time the timeline changed.
You know what...it holds together after all, now that I don't think of
it just as what past Hiro finds out in the future. It changed from the
subway on.

Well, she wouldn't have survived without Peter. I think that is plain.
But you're right, the regeneration could have come from someone else.

Right.

He should be, damnit. He should go to each of those key events and see
for himself. He could watch them in slo-mo, with instant replay as
well =) Of course, he'd be ancient in no time if he did that, or does
he stop aging when he freezes time? Probably not addressed in the
series yet, eh?

I'm not a fan of the character. He's too much of a one-note character,
and doesn't really add anything of significance to the plot.

That's not entirely certain. She stumbled on the concrete benches, but
she still might have escaped, even with Peter helping her up.
In fact, Isaac's paintings didn't ever show her dead - the body in the
picture Peter completed was Jackie's, not Claire (the "scary shadow"
painting came true **after** the "dead cheerleader" painting).

Well, except for a great foil for Peter, in the "future episode" and
finale of season 1, and perhaps later as well? (don't tell me)
I mean, other than people like himself, whom Claude Raines said exist
but we never meet, wouldn't Peter be able to handle any bad guy other
than Sylar--no problem--now that he's mastered his powers?
To me, Sylar and Peter are perfect examples of two people with similar
lives and possibilities, and one took the path of light and the other,
dark. Peter was always insignificant in his family, and Sylar felt his
entire family and inheritance was insignificant. Peter can take on
abilities from other heroes, and so can Sylar. But Sylar must commit
an evil act to gain power, and destroy those heroes to do so. Peter
must learn from them, and remember them, to gain power. Truly, good
vs. evil, mirroring one another.

That is later...she wouldn't have even gotten that far without Peter.
The episode is likely more fresh in my mind (twice in the last 2
weeks). Sylar was killing Jackie, and Claire got back up and started
healing (broken arm and face).
Sylar noticed, and turned to her, and noticed her healing (realizing
he got the wrong girl). Peter interfered at that point, and she ran
off while he stood his ground in front of Sylar.
Without him, Sylar could have smashed her against the lockers again
and cut her head open, easily. I think it is a good assumption on
Hiro's part that Sylar got the regeneration from Claire.
> In fact, Isaac's paintings didn't ever show her dead - the body in the
> picture Peter completed was Jackie's, not Claire (the "scary shadow"

That depends on when Isaac made the painting. If he made it after the
subway with Hiro and Peter, then yes it probably depicted Jackie. If
he painted it before, it could well have been Claire. I can't recall
if he said he just made those paintings before Peter arrived, or if he
had painted them a while back. Obviously he made the one with Peter
lying on the ground under the Homecoming banner a while back, or
Simone wouldn't have already sold it to Linderman. So it probably was
Claire when he painted it.
Remember: he painted the bomb destroying NYC, and later painted NYC
destroyed. Neither of those are now true. The picture could *always*
have been Claire.
But, neither of those 2 paintings showed faces clearly enough to be
sure, which in a way is good because of the ambiguity based on the two
timelines.

By the time they had recovered themselves, he was gone down the manhole.
How and why he got there will be revealed in the first episode of season
2, so I don't want to spoil it for you.

Because without Future Hiro's visit to Peter, things would have gone in
completely different directions, and they never would have all wound up
at Kirby Plaza.

No, he didn't. The writers say the voice thing is merely a special
effect, and of no bearing.

Based on the preview of volume 3, the plot will revolve around him.
Put me in the column of those who like him as a character.

One big difference is that in order for Sylar to be able to use his
power, he has to follow the path of the dark. He has to actively exert
his power, and the only way to do that is to kill (or at least, so he
believes). Peter's power, on the other hand, is passive; he absorbs the
power of anyone near him without having to do anything. He has to
actively use that power once he gets it though, although you'll find in
season 2 that that's not necessarily the case any more.
By the way, season 2 picks up four months after the end of season one,
and there are some things that seem strange, but they'll be answered in
episode eight, which backtracks those four months.

Your time line is off.
Yes, Sylar noticed as Claire healed, and she ran...and bumped into
Peter. She was making pretty good time until then, and Peter delayed
her. His presence at that point was more of a hindrance.
They ran onto the concrete steps, and she tripped. He helped her up.

Peter went to Isaac after FHiro spoke to him. At that point, Peter
wouldn't have been able to complete the picture because FHiro had
already cast the stone that changed things.

Hmm. Not so much my timeline, as my incorrect recollection of when
Claire found Peter.
I think you are correct...she did run off before meeting with Peter
again. So who knows? She could have gotten away.
I doubt it, since so few were ever able to, but it is possible.

You are correct again! I forgot that the picture was incomplete when
Peter arrived. Peter was the one who finished it.
And so it would have been Jackie with her head cut off, because he was
going to save Claire, that Peter painted.
The writers are subtle...one of the reasons I really like this show. I
was noticing all the extra nuances the second time through. One
example: the "Godsend" image. I didn't notice that it was in Chandra
Suresh's code (formed by the dashes, alternating by facing first one
direction, then the other, as the code ran), and on his book (didn't
take that picture for more than a fragmented DNA double-helix), on the
side of Claire's textbook, or in the pool (as floats) at Molly
Walker's house.

Me as well!
He really wasn't given anything to do for much of Season 2, except
"look creepy". Blame the writers, not the character...

I was a troop for 22 years; I retired in 1983. My daughter and
son-in-law were in Desert Shield and Desert Storm (that's where they
met, actually). He is still on active duty, due to retire in about a
year. So far he's managed to not get sent to the Sandbox this time
around.

He WAS a great character, and had he died he would have remained one
of the great television baddies. But bringing him back brings the
worry that things aren't gonna change much and things will quickly
grow stale.
One of the attributes of Dragonball Z was taking the first baddie,
Vegeta, Prince of the Saiyans, and slowly turning him good, because
there were greater evils out there. But first, he had to overcome the
inferiority complex of being defeated by a lower Saiyan, Son Goku, the
main character. So where an episode fits within the greater timeline
can be found by this huge character arc spanning the series.
Kinda cool, huh?
So Volume 3 cannot be the rehash of Volume 1 that we all fear.
Hopefully, though, Origins won't be cancelled, which means that the
main series will not have to introduce new characters anymore. This
would be a huge advantage over Lost, which suffered similar fan
complaints for the new characters usurping screen time from the
favorites of the first season.

Hey, does this allow me to download them in full ahead of watching
them? I can't check now because I don't want to do this from work.
I watched Episodes 201 and 202 on nbc.com last night, and the kept
stopping and resuming...it was REALLY annoying and I don't want to
watch 9 more that way!
I have DSL, so I don't think it was the speed. So, at any rate, if
torrent is a way for me to download in advance and avoid hitches,
great. If not, is there a way?
Thanks!

What's your browser? The video player at nbc.com really doesn't do well
with Firefox, but you can get an extension that allows you to open a tab
as IE and that seems to help.

Somebody posted another site from Australia, and I got much better
results with that. The quality of video streaming comes and goes, like
it's a race between technological improvements and consumer demand.

My browser is IE...for some reason it's funny to me that you don't
assume that from the start. =)

I only know that it did that for me when I tried with Firefox before I
got the IE tab extension. Though it didn't just stop and start, it would
play about a part and a half then freeze up the whole computer.
