: Well, there is the whole xenophobic issue: "let's nuke the Stargate on
: another planet simply because we're scared of what we don't even know
: is there". ;-)
But wasn't that a very popular theme during the whole of movie making
history, maybe prior to the last few years - "the enemy is always out there,
and he's always really, really bad" - maybe not so much during WWII - a lot
of those "hero" movies were "buck it up Johnny" type of hero movies, but
when there was an "alien", whether it was a foreigner or an actual alien,
the general public was shown as pretty xenophobic, right? And then through
the 60's and 70's.... same thing.... sure, we had My Favorite Martian and
ET.... but those were flukes, and look what happened to them, eh? The whole
"nuke the Gate" to keep the "Big Bad Alien Buggies" out concept was SO
typical "those guys in charge" mindset....
I never really understood the concept of recalling a depressed, traumatized,
*possibly* suicidal (I don't think his superiors really knew he was actually
suicidal, or they wouldn't have put him in command of the mission) officer
for this mission. They never say what it was about Jack O'Neil that made him
so fantastic that out of all the officers in all the Air Force, they needed
specifically HIM..... Gotta wonder....
Peace,
Lisa

stop wondering...
Hi Lise, it's supermann!
Can I **** with you for a moment? Read your comments...here's my
response:
You may recall this exchange between one of O'Neel's soldiers and
Ferretti. The black soldier says they shouldn't be concerned that
Jackson can't find the "earth symbol" to dial home, because sooner or
later SGC back home should reopen the gate on their own...
...but Ferretti corrects him, saying that the connection has to be
dialed from "here" (Abbydos) for the return trip, or "we're screwed!"
Here is what all this means, my dear....If SGC was all this
concerned about the possibility of an alien invasion through the
stargate, they would just rebury the sum'bitch and forget the whole
thing. Instead, they send a recon squad through, apparently in
preparation to sending even more people thru to serve whatever agenda
(i.e. exploration or exploitation) a stargate could provide (read:
material gain). Now you will remember that your boy O'Niel had
absolutely no intention of returning with his men...he was going to
blow the bomb, "signs of danger" or no. And remember, still, that the
bomb, itself, was rigged by O'Niel's superiors, to continue ticking
without option to abort....apparently they feel pretty good enough
about O'Niel's suicidal bearing to help it along. And finally,
remember that at no point, did any of the experts on the stargate
indicate that the stargate, itself, was somehow impervious to
*conventional* explosives* or demolition, nor, on the other hand, did
they give any assurance that a nuclear device would be sufficient to
disable it. Also, the question of collateral damage to the innocent,
as there must be, did not seem to be an issue to these people.
Now mix these clues together in a little stew pot, medium heat, for
about twenty minutes, sprinkling in dashes of everything you remember
from old crime shows where the bad guy does everything he can to cover
his tracks at the scene of the crime...and you get this:
The use of the bomb has absolutely nothing to do with destroying the
gate. The purpose of the bomb is to kill whomever is there to
eyewittness their incursion and their retreat, if hostilities were to
ensue.....or not. Why go through the trouble? Because the Americans
had every intention of making full colonialist use of the stargate
network...and any species that has the technological ability to resist
this multi-corporate surge, will have to be met with an unexplained
"accident". An "abbydos-to-earth" dial setting left on the stargate,
would make that agenda short-lived.
All this, on the taxpayer's dime, but without the taxpayer's
knowledge. Any windfall, the taxpayer gets nothing, knows nothing. And
Gen. Hammond won't have to testify from a glass booth at the Hague.
Jackson asked all the right questions, when they were on their knees
in the throne room. The fact that O'Niel didn't answer him...or
Ra...tells the rest of the story. Stargate stopped being a sci-fi
movie the moment O'Niel arrived on the planet. I think the whole thing
is some sort of think-tank scenario, devised by some crank to
accertain public reaction to unconstitutional behavior by imperialist
goverments against third-world sectors. All...and I mean ALL of the
clues are included in this film...to the point of..and at the risk
of...self-incrimindation.
They need to know if the goverment can get away with invasion and
mass murder...how to gauge the response from the sheep. Hell, just
make a movie of it, show it to everybody and see what the critics say.
And make sure all the clues are there...as they almost would be in
real life, "let's not delude ourselves, here"...and if they're just
too stupid to spot it, "On to Iraq!" They'll probably just talk about
strange plotholes they can't figure out, and "unneccessary" action
sequences. Hell, if the public is really dumb and stupid...they might
even grow to *like* the piece of ****.

I read the novel and dont remember that.It makes sense for Ra to do it
because there would be no point in sending the bomb back to earth if the
puny earthlings could just shut it off.
Do you have a page number for that part in the book?
I have alot of challenges with the movie which I wont go into unless it is a
must ;-)

I burned my copy some time ago, but it is detailed in the passage
when O'Niel first realized that he couldn't disarm the device.
And Ra probably didn't realise that the bomb was rigged...just as
well, he would think...his only lucky break.

"I burned my copy some time ago, but it is detailed in the passage

And Ra probably didn't realise that the bomb was rigged...just as

Ra knew what it was and took it apart. Now you have me interested in looking
it up.Bravo, you have stirred the sci-fi geek in me~

Don't blame all that on me (LOL!)
All Ra did was remove the tripod from the main casing and
disassemble the main components....the rigging seem to be in the
innards of the bomb ( based on my knowledge of new-clear physicks ).
Since you have the novel, let me screw your head further. Go to the
first chapter where Ra was just a boy in his home village in Africa.
Check out how his own people treat him...in spite of his status as a
sort of shaman's apprentice. Scope out this quote....
"The villagers discussed more than once killing the boy (Ra) in
order to set the mother's minds at ease..."
What do you think they meant by that?

You said that I see things in terms of cause and effect and personal
motives. You, sir, are absolutely correct. I do. And there is a
difference in the motives of O'Niel *VOLUNTEERING* for a suicide
mission and his superiors ACCEPTING his VOLUNTEERING.
