View Full Version : Stargate Safety
Martin 02-04-2008, 08:22 AM Always wondered why Gate security was so slack in the show. A load of soldiers stand there with no cover just waiting for something to come through the gate and wipe them out.
I'd have installed a massive water tank above the gate room which in the event of an incursion would have fully flooded the gate room drowing anyone coming through into the gate room. A great last resort.

The first line of defence is the iris. After that is the on-duty
guards, who can be backed-up by more soldiers almost instantly. The
room itself can be locked down and sealed. The level it's on can be
locked down, and the entire complex is deep under a mountain.

And finally, the self destruct can collapse the entire mountain onto the
gateroom.

But blowing up the mountain is a bit drastic is it not? What you want is to
be able to stop an incursion beyond the gate room. flooding the gate room in
seconds would do that and even if the gate remained active anyone coming
through would be drowned.
In reality the soldiers would be behind some sort of reinforced barricades
and not standing in the open.
Yes the iris does provide a defence but not once open.

The big problem with flooding the gateroom is that it is NOT a surefire way
to kill the Goa'uld. Remember, they're an aquatic snake-like critter....
The host may die, but the Goa'uld inside could escape, hide until the
water is
removed and then 'host' the first idiot that comes into the room.
There are too many nooks and crannies for one of those beasties to hide
in in
that room for such a measure to be effective.
You can always 'rinse and repeat' and eventually even a Goa'uld will get
tired,
but how many will have been killed in the meantime?
....Having said that, you could always run an electric current through
the water
before draining. That should kill 'em.

Or poison the water. I'm pretty sure even they couldn't live in
'properly' chlorinated water (or whatever would work best).
I don't think the gate room (as designed) is particularly waterproof.
Of course they could do it if they had to. If it were properly sealed
they could pump in poison gas, or remove the oxygen or...
Oh yeah, one problem I see off the bat is that the ceiling is
retractable! That could be tricky to seal properly.

not if there is an entire military contingent coming through, or some
type of energy that kills on contact.
If that happens, you want to completely seal the base and keep
anything from reaching the surface. We can always get another stargate
now that we know how they work, we just can't get another Earth.

Yeah, but the special FX team didn't have the budget for that. ;-)

I think there have been times when there were barricades in the gate
room.

And the poisoned water would effect a replicator coming through the gate
exactly how? Flooding the gate room assumes that what comes through the
gate has the same needs as a humanoid. Which may be the case some times,
but the exceptions would make it impractical.

Sometimes, the soldiers are behind reinforced barricades if they have good
reason to expect trouble.

It seemed to me, that in the long run the SGC could have placed
bunkers behind the walls of the gateroom with machine gun slits. That
would be a little less disconcerting to visiting dignitaries like
Bratek or the Tok-ra. (sorry for incorrect spellings.)

Yep, long-debated by SG1 fans. Worse, you have the gate pointed directly at

In the past few years, I've always wondered why they didn't reverse
engineer the shield around the Atlantis gate.

I would guess they haven't done it because short of dialing up a black

uninvited visitors.

Not enough time.
Even better tho would be to learn from the SGA gate and point it AWAY from
the command staff.

Agreed. Or even have it swiveling so you could point it upwards. They never
explained what would happen if the gate was pointing upwards and you came
through did they? Presumably you couldn't fall back through, so would you
float on top of the event horizon?

Well, the problem is, I don't think we've ever seen what happens when
you try to go through a gate the wrong way (which must happen a LOT --
most worlds aren't going to know the rulses, and if you don't see
somebody dial, there's no obvious way to know which way the wormhole is
facing anyway).
I'd vote for hideous painful disintigration, but that's just me.

I was actually thinking of coming through a gate which is facing vertically,
but your point is a good one. Health & safety never appeared to be something
the Ancients cared for. The Earth gate appears to be the only one with
warning markings about the unstable vortex area!!!

I don't recall the show, but didn't Teal'k go through the vertical gate one
time. The gate was burried and he went through and had something to shoot
into the dirt on the other side so he could dig out. I don't recall what
they said would hapen if he did not dig out , but if the gate was redialed
he would be cought in vortrex and die.

I was about to say the buried gate episode, but I can't remember if
they said anything about being on top of the "event horizon" after
coming through.

No. The gate was buried face down. They dialed it a bunch of times to
form a cavern, then Teal'c came through and climbed up, after they shut
it down. So we still don't know what happens if you try to go through
the wrong way.
It didn't seem to occur to them that the gate might be facing UP. If it
was, Teal'c would have come out and fallen right back on it, and we'd
have found out pretty damn quick what happens.

It was face up. They sent the MALP through, the picture came back showing it
tumbling back towards the event horizon and then lost the signal meaning
it'd fallen back into it.
If you remember, they shot some bolts connected to high tensile steel rope
through and tealc climbed up that so as not to fall back through, then had
to dig his way out.

Even if the gate was "upside down", you would have the same problem - a
still "live" gate might fall on top of the people sitting in the new
cave under it.

You would very much fall back into the wormhole and die. There is no barrier
or force preventing you from falling back and since you would be falling the
wrong way into the gate, you would not be put together at the other end and
you would just cease to exist at some point. Just like that MALP.

It goes back to past discussions about Laira's 'pregnancy' - we'd had some
fun with that. :-) Also, it was very jarring to have Jack written as having
given up after only 3 months, considering the always-quoted (very often by
him) "we don't leave men behind". The 'real' Jack wouldn't have lost his
faith in General Hammond so easily.

The rule is that wormholes are one-way--for matter. Energy can travel both
ways. Natch the rule was broken in the pilot episode when the goa'uld
stepped thru a wormhole, kidnapped a female soldier to be a potential mate
for Apophis--and then stepped back in the wormhole.
Also they've never shown someone trying to go thru an active gate--from the
"wrong" side. They've shown active gates from the back side, but not anyone
trying to go thru from the back side.

They could also put some kind of trapdoor in front of the gate so if the
right incoming signal comes in, a fleeing team would immediately fall thru
to some kind of cushion below--and out of the line of fire.

I think the military in general has special dispensation from OSHA.
A lot of their activity is "hazardous" for the employees.

Shame on you Ken, you really should know better.
That's one of the oldest false gripes on the newsgroup.
Watch the entire scene again. Watch for moments in the scene when there is
no active wormhole. Apophis re-activated the stargate from our end, it
doesn't show how, maybe he used a couple of his jaffa as a dialing device
(and manually dialled home), or used some form of stargate remote control.
We just don't know.

That, at least is true.

Doesn't count. This must be at the top of the list of things discussed over
the years, as any long-timer knows. :-) I've lost count how many people
swore on their children's lives that the wormhole stayed open all the time.
At some stage, one of the posters uploaded screencaps from the ep to prove
that the gate was shut at some point. It helped a bit. <g>

Yes it does. See below.

Depends on how often he's frequented the group in that time. He very
well
might have forgotten about it.

Actually it's never been proven the MALP was destroyed by attempting
to go
the "wrong way" through the gate. It is possible it may have simply
fallen through
the gate, but not into the wormhole, and smashed against the bottom of
the cave
behind it. The probe was not in evidence upon a redial because the
vortex forming
due to that redial would have vaporized it instantly.
Until we actually see the object itself as it tries to go the wrong
way through the
gate from a "third person" perspective there is no way to know if
either theory
is correct.
