I'm not sure I like the idea of the new leader of the Atlantis
Expedition, but it should make for some interesting feuds.

http://www.gateworld.net/news/2008/02/robert_picardo_joins_iatlantisi_.shtml

MGM and SCI FI Channel today announced the cast changes for the fifth
season of Stargate Atlantis! Here are the highlights:

# Actor Robert Picardo will join the cast as Richard Woolsey assumes
command of the Atlantis expedition. Says the press release: "The team,
led by Lt. Colonel Sheppard (Joe Flanigan), Dr. Rodney McKay (David
Hewlett), Teyla (Rachel Luttrell), Ronon (Jason Momoa) and Dr.
Jennifer Keller (Jewel Staite), must adjust to his unique leadership
style."

# Paul McGillion ("Carson Beckett") will return appear in five
episodes. McGillion was made a full-fledged regular for Seasons Two
and Three, before his character was killed off in the third season
episode "Sunday." Beckett will return to life under still unexplained,
no doubt very sci-fi circumstances in the upcoming two-part episode
"The Kindred" (airing February 22 and 29 in the U.S.).

# Michael Shanks ("Daniel Jackson") will guest star in an unspecified
number of episodes. The release does indicate that it will be more
than one.

# Amanda Tapping ("Samantha Carter") will guest star in several
episodes. A regular during Season Four, Tapping will depart the show
for her new SCI FI series Sanctuary (story). She will guest star in
"several" episodes of Atlantis Season Five, according to the network,
beginning with the season premiere, "Search and Rescue."

# The inclusion of Jewel Staite in the list above would seem to imply
that she may be elevated from "recurring" to "regular" cast member
status. This has not yet been confirmed, as it has not been uncommon
in Season Four for Staite to be included in this way in press
materials. Stay tuned.

# Today's press release from the network makes no mention of the actor
to play Captain Alison Porter. It is likely that the character will
simply be an on-going guest -- or the character has not yet been cast.

Veteran actor Robert Picardo is most famous for his 7-year role as
The Doctor in Star Trek: Voyager. He also played Coach Cutlip on The
Wonder Years, and has made guest appearances on a host of network
series, such as The West Wing, C.S.I.: New York, and The O.C.

Picardo has appeared in five episodes of Stargate Atlantis to date, as
well as seven episodes of Stargate SG-1. He was most recently seen
interfering with Colonel Carter's command in Season Four's "The Seer,"
and will return for the season finale, "The Last Man."

Richard Woolsey was first introduced late in SG-1's seventh season, as
a scrupulous N.I.D. agent and ally of Senator Robert Kinsey ("Heroes,
Part 2"). He turned on Kinsey and impressed himself to the S.G.C. in
"Inauguration," and later left the N.I.D. to join the International
Oversight Advisory -- the organization that oversees the Atlantis
expedition.

Season Five of Stargate Atlantis goes before cameras later this month
for a full, 20-episode season. The show is expected to premiere later
in 2008 on SCI FI in the United States.

Stay tuned to GateWorld for the latest news as it develops!

Oh my god. Robert Picardo as Commander? They are going to have to do some
SERIOUS re-writing of his character there. The current character is an
arsehole and not very likeable. It would have been better to bring in
someone new altogether.

Hey how about Torri Higginson??? Hmm.

Michael Shanks, that will be good, it's alsways seemed odd that inSG1 he was
the one who was the biggest expert on theAncients yet only ever made one
trip to Atlantis (OK he did try to get there several times)

Amanda Tapping. Waste of space as a character in Atlantis, she's treading on
Hewlitts toes there.

But, then again, having the harmony of the team disrupted by someone
who's major concern is the bottom line might make the show more
interesting.

As history has shown, though, the character will be watered down and
start spouting the party line - the SGA team is right, IOW is an
inconvenience, blah blah blah. That is, when he is actually given some line.

No. As history proved, bringing anyone from SG1 into Atlantis is a
pretty bad idea.

I'd rather that they get someone entirely new, like they attempted to do
when Weir briefly became head of SG1. A really radical idea would be to
bring in an alien, a non-tauri human, or even a Lantian.

Perhaps this would be a way to bring back Fran the Replicator, or, in
the extreme, a Wraith.

Carter is, and always will be, a better scientist than Rodney.

But the old doctor is dead and they are bringing him back for a few
episodes. It would be easy enough to bring Weir back if they wanted to. You
are right about the watering down of characters, take McKay, he's nothing
like as annoying as he was in SG1, although if you watch him in "The Pegasus
Project" he does revert back to his old SG1 personality (lusting after
Carter all the time)

I think Shanks will be OK for a guest showing, I liked RDA in the two parter
he was in (The Return)

I wouldn't say Weir was a ghost leader, fact is a large number of the
episodes were set off base so she's not going to appear. Notice in Star Trek
TNG that Picard was shipbound a lot of the time as clearly letting your most
prised possession (your Captain) swan off on away missions just wasn't
realistic. Same with Weir, her job was to run Atlantis, that's why I don't
see why Carter is going on away missions, she's the Commander of Atlantis,
her job is to run the expedition and look after the people there.

Agreed. And he is a very good actor. No one who joins as a regular member,
can be one note or one dimensional. And he has started to soften a bit (see
an earlier episode), so he has already stopped being by the book.

I agree. I was never a fan of the original series, now it seems like SGA
will become SG1 redux. I didn't like Shanks or Tapping. I'd take anyone
coming over other than a SG1 regular. And could they stop throwing bones to
their friends? I imagine this is how we got stuck with Jewel and Amanda.

"interesting fueds"???? I'm thinking that it's going to turn into
Harry Potter in Space - with the entire crew trying to do all kinds of
crap behind Wooley's back, constantly, like bratty kids. Gaaah..... I
can't stand the character. What are they thinking???

I agree. I think it was a mistake to ever let them get in touch with
earth. I liked the original idea of them being utterly on their own.
It made them vulnerable in a way that worked very well. But this is
blood under the bridge. Bringing in characters from another show in
large numbers? Very bad idea.

> > Carter is, and always will be, a better scientist than Rodney.

Oh, I think we did. That retrovirus was an accomplishment at a level
equal to anything Rodney ever did, both in the complexity of the work
and in the poorly thought out use of it. What did they think would
happen? I always wondered why Beckett didn't continue work on the
Hoffan inoculation. By itself, it was also a poorly thought out idea
(although we don't really know for sure how the Wraith would react to
indigestable and poisonous prey), but refined so it doesn't kill half
the people who take it, and then followed up with an offer of the
retrovirus to make life possible for Wraith might be a workable plan.
Not easy or bloodless (many Wraith are sure to react poorly), but a
possible plan. I also wonder why Beckett or someone never worked on
the idea of making the Wraith able to live on something else: animals
or plants even. All that got wiped out when rescue arrived from
earth. I liked the Wraith as aliens. They're not so much evil as
just hungry. It's sort of like looking at the Cattleman's Association
from the point of view of cows.

Beckett, was also limited by the fact that he mostly wasn't a
scientist but a practicing doctor. They should, however, have medical
researchers on board. We know Katie Brown was working on leukemia
with her baby ferns, but she was a botanist; it seems likely she had
some colleagues who were focusing more on whatever it was she was
extracting from those plants.

Smacks of desperation. They are throwing everything at it. Seems like they
have run out of real story ideas and are just thrown 'names' at the show.
Expect RDA to turn up, then that'll signal the end for Atlantis.

LOL. Regular!

Sounds like they doing a real gutting on the show. Well it probably deserves
it after watching 15eps of season 4.

Im suprised Teyla/Ronon made the cut or giving Picardo the head job.

Just bring in Shanks and save the show.

The more I think about it, the more sense it makes to have Sam move into
the lab and argue with Rodney about who is the smartest.

Have Beckett and Jewel Staite marry and share the Atlantis practice.

Bring in Picardo as the new base commander. Have him be an ******* who
gets in the way of everybody else.

Get rid of the pregnant gal and replace her with Katherine Parkinson.

Why not bring in Lexa Doig and have her and Jewel Staite have a massive
lesbian relationship?

That's actually a damn good idea, but they are too unimaginative and
afraid to go for it.

Well, I'm sure that most of the male viewers of the show, and that's
probably most of the viewers, would see the artistic appropriateness of
such a story line.

Atlantis could also break new ground by filming two versions of each show,
one with the present name, which would hint delicately at the
relationship, and a second version, 'Stargate Sappho', to be shown
after 9pm, which would be more explicit, and include as much nudity and
panting as they could get away with. Of course, Jewel Staite and Lexa Doig
might not go for it, but if the show has become this liberated from musty
conventions, that's of no importance, and a couple of actresses named
Candy and Bonnie would do nicely.

Picardo was also on China Beach for its entire run opposite the fantastic
Dana Delany.
