Mesa firm out to make impact

JJ Hensley
The Arizona Republic
Jun. 24, 2006 12:00 AM

It's poised to become a leader in the online video gaming industry, but
first Mesa's Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment has to get a product on the
market.

That's not easy.

Working on Stargate Worlds takes years of preparation and planning,
going back and forth with executives at MGM Studios, which distributed
the 1994 film Stargate, and the production company in charge of the
sci-fi TV series and spinoffs.

The delay time is typical for these types of games, but when Stargate
Worlds is released in about two years, the franchise's cult following
means millions of fans will be waiting to snatch it up and throw down a
monthly subscription fee to play online with gamers worldwide.

The buzz is building at Stargate Worlds' Web site,
www.stargateworlds.com, and at an online gaming site,
www.tentonhammer.com, that recently named Stargate Worlds as its most
anticipated, massively multiplayer online game, or MMO, in production.

All those expectations are great, but Gary Whiting, Cheyenne's chairman
of the board, has ambitious goals for the company: to operate up to 20
separate studios designing MMO and other games, making Cheyenne Mountain
among the top producers.

With 30 to 60 employees working on each project, meeting that vision
would make Cheyenne Mountain among the largest private employers in the
southeast Valley and help reverse the metro area's reputation as lacking
the kind of creative jobs that attract young professionals.

The company essentially started when Whiting stepped in to keep an
agreement with MGM from expiring. Whiting, whose background includes
other software-related endeavors, jumped at the chance to get involved
in the gaming industry.

"When they mentioned MGM and Stargate, I said, 'Absolutely,' and put in
a couple million out of my own pocket," Whiting said.

That was the easy part.

In cobbling together a video-game production company in an area known
for retirees and resorts, Whiting found himself looking outside the
Valley for executives with experience in the field. It's a process,
Whiting said, that's mirrored on the Arizona Diamondbacks' successful
run to the World Series five years ago, when the team brought in
successful veterans with a winning track record.

If that's the case, Joe Ybarra and Chris Klug are Cheyenne Mountain's
Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling.

Whiting recruited Ybarra, Cheyenne's vice president of product
development, away from Warner Bros., where he was a producer of the
Matrix online series, and Klug, Cheyenne's creative director, away from
his work as a graduate instructor at Carnegie-Mellon University in
Pittsburgh.

Their presence, particularly Ybarra's, who was a founding member of
Electronic Arts, gave Cheyenne Mountain some immediate cachet among game
producers and made the next task easier, Whiting said.

"That's why we hired Joe, for one. A lot of people come on board because
Joe's on board," Whiting said, adding that workers were also attracted
to the Stargate brand name and the stock package. But bringing employees
from the Golden State, and elsewhere, to the Valley of the Sun can still
be a struggle.

The problem, Ybarra and Klug said, wasn't the lack of education in the
area's technical workforce; it was a lack of experience. "The difference
between theory in the classroom and practical business is night and
day," Klug added.

Cheyenne has deals with Collins College in Tempe and the Art Institute
of Phoenix to help students develop some of those skills before they
enter the workforce, Ybarra said.

But Cheyenne will have to get the game on the market for those students
to have jobs.

Although the game is at least two years away, Whiting says he believes
the possibilities for success are limitless.

Whiting points Blizzard Entertainment, with more than 6 million
subscribers paying more than $12 a month to play the game World of
Warcraft, when asked about the sustainability of Cheyenne's business.

Are you associated with this, Fred? (I ask because of
the geography; I know you live in Phoenix.)

Nope. First I'd heard of the company (this was from the local fishwrap
which had a bunch of photos in the print version but none in the online
version, go figure) although a few of the names are familiar to me.

One of the board members is a member of my game group, and unrelated to that
my wife knows one of the developers that works for them. I'm hoping to get
a shot at some beta testing. ;)

They seem to have a good shop down there, but I've never been interested
enough to check it out myself.

Ah. Well, maybe you'll get to beta test soon. :)

Personally, I'd spend the summer in AZ, and move to Colorado for the
winter.

Breaking into the MMO field is really, really hard. Most games get an acute
case of failure to launch syndrome.

It's all about the gameplay, something a first timer is NOT going to get
anything like right. I will probably give it a try just because it's
stargate, but I'm not optimistic about them doing a good job.

EA is the secondmost hated (after SOE) MMO producer on the planet right
now. They have a long history of destroying their games and not giving them
proper support. Not good!

SO they think they're going to grow the talent from zero and have a
polished product in two years? What the hell are they thinking?

Too bad they don't have, you know, actual TALENT on their team like
Blizzard does. *

I thought EA was known for buying OTHER game houses, ordering them to
create game sequels that don't work, not allowing the writers to make
patches, and then shutting down the game house for producing a flop.

Good someone gets to try it before it crashes and burns when people
compare it to world of warcraft *g*

There are yahoo groups dedicated to their take over/shut down of Legends of
Kesmai, which in it's earlier incarnation Island of Kesmai pioneered

If they were out to make an impact they wouldn't need to be based on
something with an existing fan base. They'd create something new that stood
on it's own merits. I think this project is destined to follow a similar
one from about 10 years ago. An exerience MUG company, called Simutronics,
bought the rights to the name Hercules and Xena and created a game called
Hercules and Xena, Alliance of Heroes. It didn't do so well, in fact it did
so poorly that once the licensing on the names expired they didn't renew it
and the game still exists, though now it's simply called Allience of Heroes
and rarely has more then 30 or 40 players in it.

CO has lovely winter temperatures. Maybe it's the altitude but the sun

That's for dang sure. If every budding MMO could equal the success of WoW
just by pointing at it, every human on the planet would be playing one MMo
or another by now. Instead, WoW has more players than the rest ...
COMBINED. And rightfully so - there's some really crappy MMOs out there. *

That's how Hollyweird works. One company does something mildly new or
successful, and then all the others jump on the bandwagon making clones
of it ... hence the fads.

It's even worse if you live outside America. Here we get American Idol,
Australian Idol, New Zealand Idol, UK Idol ... and now all the dancing
shows and game shows ... plus the usual clones from other netwroks of
those countries too. :-(

Computer game companies used to work the same way, but these days
almost everything is just a prettied-up Doom clone anyway.

And rock climbing! Rock climbing in Chicago is just lame. Winters in
Chicago are just plain nasty. So are summers. Fall and spring are at
least some what tolerable. That's why I left. There are only two
advantages to living in Chicago; actual culture and sane drivers.
People in CO are clueless, regardless of the weather.

Yes, the Rockies has lovely temperatures. What was I thinking? It's a

It was 40 here yesterday. There have been days people where shorts and

I'm so tired of shooters, hack-n-slashers, beat-downers, and the same ole

I don't play many games these days, but the few times I've tried to
play any of these "Doom clones" I've become motion-sick after only a
few minutes. The car racing ones seem to be fine though.

I can't see why EVERY game has to be done in 3D, even the good old'
platform-jumping games (although those are few and far between unless
you have a Gameboy).

Lemmings, the best series of games ever. Not much plot, not too
complex, but funnier then anything else I've ever played! And
the most... unique music too.

And available on almost every system known to man. :-)

BUT, they even had to spoil that series by trying to make it 3D. :-\

At one stage there was even talk of a Lemmings movie or animated TV
show, but it never appeared.

Well yeah, Chicago is in the plains of the midwest. Not many mountains or
cliffs for rock-climbing, or downhill skiing. However, Chicago winters have
been far, far, far milder since 1990 than what were REALLY bad winters in
the previous 30 years. We have had two winters that's been notably bad: one
a few years ago when it actually snowed throughout December (because
typically it hadn't seriously snowed more than powder until well into
January) and this year, which hadn't been so bad until this month when we
got really heavy snowfalls, repeatedly in a week's time of snowfalls over 6
inches--altho the real problem has been the potholes. I got a flat two days
in a row due to potholes when I've never hit a pothole that bad in the
previous decade.

Oooh, that's that outdoor sports activity. Sorry, I don't cotton too much
with that outdoor crowd. It's hard to maintain an ethernet connection, watch
video on demand or heat stuff up in the microwave while outside.
