4.75

Why haven't they been using these writers all along? Tight thou simple
plot, funny boob stuff, more character growth for Rodney with
continuity (a combo rarely seen), a smart contribution from
"Jennifer" (who? what? when?), and they even thought to toss stuff out
the door to lighten the load (though I would have chucked the
machinery on the wall; when did dirt start weighing so much?).

After the last few dismal episodes this one was a huge surprise.

wow

um 3.5

it was better than Flash Gordon

They gave Sam lots to do -- finally. Too bad it wasn't better stuff.

Whatever happened to leaving a guard at the gate, anyway?

What is the Doctor, the Atlantis slut? First Ronon, now McKay?

I turned in about 10 minutes into it and watched the beginning last,
which was a good thing, because I'd have been REALLY annoyed had I seen
how they fell in first. McKay falls through the ground, and BOTH silly
women go right up to the hole, next to each other????

I assume the broken leg will be used as reason for us not to see Sam for
awhile. Sigh.

Maybe on the theory that the machinery was there all along and the
thing was deigned to hold it but not the +added+ weight of the dirt?
Maybe the machinery was too big or bulky to move? Or physically
attached to the walls/floor?

Wanted to see Rodney go after those kids
once they got topside--would have been worth
another .5! :-)

Pretty good for a non-scifi episode. The interaction between the
characters was fun, especially Rodney's communication problems. He came
through in the end, though.

2.0

It was pretty bad, especially the part with the kids. Obviously this
was just a filler episode but it was just painful to watch.

3.5

Kinda drags in bits, and why Carter didn't take over when she was the
climber or shut McKay up when he threatened the kid was a bit of an idiot
plot.

Sam shoulda been the one to figure out that crossbeam bit.

They had to see if McKay was in immediate danger. Carter was the leader and
had to see for tactical / strategic reason, Keller for medical reasons.

Tho Keller was right, why the frell didn't they take a jumper? It's like the
SG teams LIKE hiking all over the place.

Starbuck showed up in episodes after she broke her leg.

I agree about the weight, but maybe the displacement of the machinery
would stress the already straining supports and bring the room down more
quickly.

I loved how Keller said that if they didn't stop him, Rodney could go on
like that forever (when he was apologizing and explaining the body type
differences between Sam and Jennifer).

Obvious question, but why doesn't Sam have one of the Gou'ld healing devices
with her? Or have they decided that that sor tof thing is no longer
relevant?

There have been about 13 "filler" episodes this Season.

I give it 4 Stars. It was nice but not as enjoyable as previous
episodes.

Now we know what episode David Hewlett, Amanda Tapping & Jewel Staite
were filming when Joe Flanigan & Jason Momoa were off filming last
week's episode. Nothing like trying to keep production costs down.

Finally! Sam gets more than half a dozen lines and some action! It
WOULD have to have Rodney in it, but at least he didn't save the day.
The doctor is turning into a person now, too 8-)

2/3 good characters, no Wraith, no Replicators. . .

Compared to what we've been getting so far, since I can't go back and
lower the others. . .

Maybe Carter's kidneys have finely removed the naquadah from her blood
stream.

Or maybe the producers decided that giving our heroes a magical healing
device was too much of a crutch for the writing staff.

SOMEBODY'S rooting interest is showing... ;-)

I would have had Crassus, Pompey and Caesar as my 5 star "trio."

3.75 (going with the sports theme - Pujols, Rolen and Edmonds)

Some good bits with some silly stuff (frex Rodney's obsession).

If the struts were designed to hold x tonnes, they'd last even longer
holding up x - 1. At some point that room would have been full of
miners and ore (or whatever the crates held) too, so the struts
shouldn't have given out with the addition of a pile of dirt.

They could have taken half a second to acknowledge that. It's not a
big deal though.

Yes I think that's it. Shame they allowed it for 10 years of SG1 though, we
can hardly be expected to forget can we?

Looked like the room used to be part of a larger building, the center of
which had fallen into the big hole. the struts holding it up weren't
designed to be it's only support.

1.5.

You have three fairly intelligent people in a room together, and the
best thing they can find to discuss is who they'd make out with?

Keller said that she has always been underestimated; perhaps that's
because her frame of reference seems to be party times. Sam and Rodney
barely hid their contempt for her. She also seems intent on sleeping her
way through the men of Atlantis.

The plot was fairly bland, and I can't really find fault in what Sam &
Rodney tried, although I did think they dismissed the red door a little
too quickly. It's always worth looking outside the box for solutions.

3 A strong 3. A lot more fun than the other "gee we're stuck" episode. Nice
byplay, snappy dialogue. "Scary monsters?"
Some problems, though.
When did Sam ever see a contol panel she didn't just have to open to see if
she could get it to work? Between the two of them, and all the stuff laying
around, they could have McGuyvered a generator with their gas supply.
"The dirt's heavy" was pretty weak, even though the place was damn unstable.
Why was the door open?
But on a high note, if our little doctor girl doesn't get some pretty quick,
everybody's going to be wondering why all the doorknobs are so sticky.

She shared an almost-kiss with one guy and then days (or weeks) later
asked another guy out for a drink and from that you deduce that she's
"intent on sleeping her way through the men of Atlantis"? Despite the
fact that, to our knowledge, she actually, you know, *slept* with anyone?

Do you hold all women to such puritanical standards or just TV
characters?

Did anyone else realize that Sam was basically asking Rodney for
the Reader's Digest condensed explanation for things, when for so
many years on SG:1, she was even *worse*? :-)

How many times did Jack give her 'the look' and simply say, "CARTER!"
;-) I thought she might give Rodney the same look and say in the same
tone Jack used to use: "MCKAY!" ;-)

McKay: blather, blah blah, blithering droning, on and on, etc, at naseum
Carter: (interrupting) McKAY!
McKay: stopping in mid-syllable to say 'yes?' with an innocent look in
his eyes...
Carter: SHUT UP, Rodney!
McKay: (with an apologetic tone to his voice) Oh. Right. Shutting up
now. I'll just be over here in the corner, keeping my mouth shut. You
won't hear a word outta me again! Nope, not me, I'm not... (catching the
glare from Carter and Keller, suddenly does shut up)

appearances on SG-1?

Of course, that was the clean version for TV. The real game is 'who
would you screw' and they were being really really benign -- just
picking two reasonable candidates. You need to mix it up. Once in a
while you pick two HORRIBLE candidates. Or widely divergent people . .
.. "Stephen Hawking or Newman from Seinfeld" . . . and then you've got
flavors, like "Classic or Current" as in "Elizabeth Taylor"

else filler.

| Sam shoulda been the one to figure out that crossbeam bit.

Real Carter would have been out of there in minutes. (With all the
available materials even I could probably have gotten out and I'm not
at all athletic.) This Carter had to ask Rodney whether radios would
work underground. And why don't they carry FTL communications devices?
They've had access to the technology for years and I'll bet the Ancients
had something better than Tok'ra recycled Tollan communicators.

You think she's on the show because she's such a convincing doctor?

Rodney was an unlikeable lech in SG:1 who got himself banished to
Siberia, IIRC. In Atlantis, they're portraying him as pretty much
innocent due to his nerdiness. :-)

Imo, if a teevee character flirts with another series regular (and she or he
is a regular also), people will expect them to be together or to continue
the flirting for more than one episode. What were all those looks between
her and Ronon about a couple of weeks ago? I guess the writers forgot all
about that and decided to soften her up with the drink date with Rodney.
This is one of the reasons I have a problem with the John/Teyla set up.
They drop all these hints over the years, but I don't see it happening at
all. And it also begs the question, is John just a tease? If Teyla took
him to heart (which she didn't since she's pregnant by someone else) and
waited on him to make the next move, she'd be an old hag by the time he got
around to it. Oh and he'd Shatner the entire galaxy first.

OT to this thread, I think the baby is John's, and it'll be a mixed
Wraith/Ancient child who can power the Ancient tech and read/manipulate the
Wraith mind. Or maybe not.

How does "what people expect" change what actually is shown?

This episode was insulting to the intelligence of anyone watching it. Let
me list what I can remember (almost) 48 hours later

Sam's out of shape but Rodney isn't?

Yeah, let's all crawl up to the unstable hole Rodney just fell through

Sam the idiot. "Will our radios work down here?" then tries to open a door
without noticing the control panel next to it until Rodney points it out.

They need to get out, because they've added a bunch of weight to the room
and the struts are collapsing. Gee, maybe throw all the crap you can out
the door that leads to the bottomless pit? given all the crap they ended up
using in that room, I'm sure there were 300 pounds + dirt they could have
lost. They even show Jewel scooping dirt out the door, but never actually
mention it as a strategy.

Even though the room is collapsing and they have no idea when the next
tremor is, they let Rodney fool around with the grappling hook. Then when
he proves he doesn't have a clue at what he's doing they let him make more
attempts. Umm, speed is of the essence here.

The two physics geniuses don't know the cross-support trick, but the doctor
does? Seriously?

The broken leg cliché and the dangling at the end of the rope cliché. I'm
only surprised they didn't get to the "Sam gets a major leg injury" the
first time the crates collapsed.

Sam climbs down with an extra rope so Jewel can pull her over. Then Rodney
climbs down without a rope? And Jewel doesn't toss over the one Sam used?

They get .5 for MacGyvering/Mythbustering up the steam cannon, but that's
it.

This is a new low point for Atlantis. Every writer who worked on this one
should be fired for failing the 10-year old test.

Sam's clearly taken a bonk or two on the head.

Yeah, they should have taken the hook from Rodney WAY sooner. It's not
like Sam isn't his boss.

Nah. Atlantis is usually worse. At least this time we had some
somewhat engaging castmembers. Think how awful this would have been
with Tayla and Weir and Zelenka.

Yes and you could ask why they keep trying to shoot Wraith using crappy
P90's and 9mm pistols. Why they don't have a Sarcophagus handy for
emergencies, Gou'ld healing devices, why no Stargate carried on the Earth
ships, why they don't ever have appeared to have heard of 4X4's, trail bikes
etc.

Wasn't there just a characters trapped and have to find a way out

Yes, agreed about Real Carter. Then again the Pegasus galaxy in general
seems to have a deliterious affect on humans. They skill go exploring to
alien planets without a shred of disguise, yet want to keep their presence a
secret.

FTL comms would probably draw a lot of power, the kind they want to power
the city. Of course FTL comms wouldn't be needed if a) they had used a
jumper or b) had extra guards with them or at the gate.

The lack of land vehicles has been a long-running complaint of fans since
SG1 started. They could always do what they do on Earth-based eps, show them
getting into and getting out of vehicles at their destination to deal with
whatever crisis--since filming vehicles in motion would be more expensive.

I thought there was some kind of long-term damage / danger to using the
sarcophagi repeatedly, to explain why they didn't. Or it makes a person
addicted to it.

Good points about the machineguns and stargates.

That scraping of the barrel thing - they must have found one with a double

Atlantis is worse that the writing of SG-1 was post S8 (give or take). Are
they going to keep this up for another season, until they give us another
show and are allowed to kill this one off?

You're assuming a lot from one throw-away line.

It was an exaggeration for emphasis. Keller has had two "almost"
encounters in a few weeks, when the other men and women on the show
(actually, on both SG1 and SGA) have, maybe, a single spark a season.

The whole scene would have been better served had they simply left out
the line "you're really bad at this", which suggests that she isn't just
asking Rodney out for a drink, but had some romantic interest in him.

Well, yeah. Rodney isn't an alpha male type; Sam is probably right at the
limit of his lifting capacity. And yet despite being in extreme pain, he
still held onto the rope long enough for her to reach safety. If that's not

They didn't necessarily do it, but I wouldn't rule it out.

The building was on stilts because after they mined at that point, they
started mining *under* the room. And rather than relocate all of the rooms
they had even deeper, they simply put stilts up while they mined.

Not an unbelievable thing.

Sorry but that myth has been done to death. Both Daniel and Jack were put
into them multiple times, in fact Daniel did have some effects but he's
clearly back to normal. Hey, if you were dying what would you choose? It's

Actually a Stargate would be very useful to have. If you need to transport
someone back to Atlantis or have Atlantis send someone to you or if you have
an emergency on board. So long as you know where you are you can use it.
There are plenty of planets where they could take a gate from.

Couldn't agree more. The key word here is repeatedly; the occasional use
clearly does no harm, or very little. This just hasn't been thought through
very well by the SG-1 writers; they were left with the movie's legacy of a
sarc and while they had decided to leave it in the series (would have been
easy to leave it out, had they wanted to) they forgot to come up with good
enough reasons for SGC not obtaining one at some stage.

They can use them when they stop. Still better than not having a gate at
all. It may also be possible to use a gate while the ship is moving,
providing it is slow enough. But I could be wrong here.

How many times has a ship been stranded with no way of getting back to
Earth? If you have a gate onboard, you just dial home. Just this one point
would be good enough for me.

Not sure what you mean here, in the context it doesn't make sense to me.
Jumpers have them - the gates? - because they fit inside the gate?

Except that's a retcon. Originally you could blast a Wraith to pieces
and the pieces would still live. Remember the arm scene ripped off

They were collecting Stargates at one point and had dozens of them on a
