View Full Version : Trek XI Hires Carolyn Porco as Technical Consultant

Carolyn Porco, the leader of the Imaging Science team on NASA'S Cassini
mission at Saturn, has accepted an invitation from Star Trek
director/producer, J.J. Abrams, to join the Star Trek production crew as
a consultant on planetary science and imagery....

"Carolyn and her team have produced images that are simply stunning",
said Abrams. "I'm thrilled that she will help guide our production in
creating an authentic vision of space, one that immerses our audience in
a visual experience as awe-inspiring as what Carolyn's cameras have
captured."

Porco also directs the Cassini Imaging Central Laboratory for Operations
(CICLOPS) at the Space Science Institute in Boulder, Colorado. CICLOPS
is the center of uplink and downlink flight operations for the Cassini
imaging experiment, and the place where Cassini images are processed for
release to the public. (Cassini images of Saturn and its rings and moons
can be found at the official imaging team website http://ciclops.org )....

Porco played a prominent role in the Voyager mission to the outer
planets in the 1980s, and is also an imaging scientist on NASA's New
Horizons mission, currently on its way to Pluto.

Any way you look at it, I'd say this can only help.

Like the examples in the Whitfield book, where they showed the memos
that were completely ignored?

Or like the guy they hired for TMP, who they completely ignored?

The point is that this new ST film will be largely set in our solar
system. The filmmakers are looking to find some interesting ways of
representing our planetary neighbors.

The worst that can happen in that case is that there's
no improvement. It's not like, say, announcing that
they've brought the cgi team from "remastered" over
to work on the film.

Well I for one would like to see what NASA officially says the Klingon home
world actually looks like. <g>

The Klingon home world IS in our solar system, according to ENTERPRISE.

You'll note they studiously avoided THAT!

I didn't know any of that was true.

What such a technical consultant can advise on, is what any Class M
planet would look like as seen from space. Roddenberry limited most of
the Big E's voyages to Class M planets, and so rendering those
accurately is a major issue for any Star Trek production.

Vulcan, for example, appears to be Mars-like: Dry climate, reddish
deserts, little water. Except it is warmer (probably closer to its
primary star) and larger (so its atmosphere is denser). Thus it makes
sense for the FX artists to start with how Mars really looks from space,
and use that as a starting point for rendering Vulcan:
