He never had a chance because he didn't have a large enough constituency. Politicians don't win or fail because of media conspiracies, or because the people "don't get it", or anything. They win or fail because they are espousing ideas which are supported by a majority (or the largest minority) of people who care enough about politics to vote. Me, I liked the idea of him winning because I conisder myself a libertarian, but I never thought he would win. The central problem is he's a Rothbardian type isolationist libertarian. His central plank was withdrawing American armed forces from, well everywhere. The problem is, America is pretty strictly divided into two camps- liberal left wingnuts who want a socialist world government thing, so they won't support him because although he's anti-war (good) he's also small government (very bad, since most lefties derive their very livelihoods from feeding at the trough of an ever-expanding government), and conservative right wingnuts who want the US to be an independent nation and small government, which Paul favours, but who want to fight wars, which Paul was resolutely against. A slash-government hawk could win. Somebody who said "I'm going to cut the size of government in half, while bombing Iran into a lake of glass", he could win. But there's little support for a libertarian pacifist isolationist. Nice try though. If Paul supporters are supporters of his economic ideas (Austrian School) and constitutional, small government philosophy, rather than just being anti-war Troofers, I'd suggest they need to be looking at getting involved with creating a mass constituent base for libertarianism beyond the Paul campaign, to give another candidate a voter base in some future election. Start campaigning for small government sound money congressmen, and city councillors, and state governors, and so on. When the massive economic crash which is surely coming arrives, make sure to spread the message that it was caused by central banking, corporate socialism, big government liberalism and interventionist economics. Tell everyone you know why fiat money always makes the rich richer and everybody else very much poorer. Get organised against the North American Union, so you don't suffer the same collapse into a soviet system we're experiencing in Europe. Don't give up Spook. Paul was a stalking horse for libertarianism at a national level. Now begins the long march through the Institutions. Heh. IMO, the biggest reason for this is that the constituents he already had went online and behaved as if they were members of some religious cult soliciting people in airports. Oh, I'm sure that isn't true. True, Ron Paul's usenet fans were very obnoxious and the thought crossed my mind that anyone they liked wasn't someone I wanted to see in power, but there aren't all that many people on usenet these days.
