What are your favorite scenes from each novel: Dune, Dune Messiah, Children
of Dune, God Emperor of Dune, Heretics of Dune, and Chapterhouse Dune?

I love this question! Of course, I don't know when (or if) I'll have
the time to think back through, and possibly even leaf back through the
books to verify which memory belongs with which book. But I do have
some wonderful scenes in my head, and sorting through them to pick out
the favorites would be a worthy endeavor if the time were available.
Your questions are often a bit lame (forgive me--I guess you are just
trying too hard to stimulate conversation, which is undoubtedly a
difficult and mostly thankless job) so I wanted to give you some props
for coming up with this one. I'm actually hoping to answer it
eventually!

My favorite scene in Dune would have to be when Count Fenring refuses to
fight Paul. In Dune Messiah, when the Atreides family meet Hayt. In
Children of Dune, when Leto escapes from the tiger. In God Emperor, when
Leto falls from the cliff. In Heretics, when Miles is trapped in the mentat
hall of mirrors. And in Chapterhouse, when Duncan spies on Marty and
Daniel.

Hmm, well here are some scenes that stick out in my mind. In God Emperor
both scenes containing "Never be in the presence of someone who's company
you don't want to die in" (paraphrased). Duncan says this to Moneo and
the Naib of the Torno (sp?) museum Fremen.

In the opening chapters of Dune when Paul and Halleck are training on
Caladan and Paul thinks he has Gurney beat only to find out Gurney had
him also.

In Dune Messiah when Alia was up to...13 I think, lights on the training
dummy. Paul's knife throw to deactivate it and the following
conversation concerning Paul's forays into double digits with the lights.

There's so many more.

, God Emperor of Dune

Leto demurs from killing Malky. His Majordomo takes over and Malky's
reaction. Also, at this time, Anteac's "Death Shout".....

, Heretics of Dune

Alma Mavis Taraza and Darwi Odrade finally meet as strangers. Only a
lifetime of hard training keeps her from striking out violently at
Odrade. Then....180 degrees... Two Reverend Mothers together with a

, and Chapterhouse Dune?

Murbella opens a can of WhoopAss on her former sisters. Odrade is
killed in the melee. Or is she? Did she sacrifice herself to ensure
Murbella's ascension. Hmmmmm. Damn you, Frank Herbert! :)

Some of my favourites:

Dune: After the fugue, when Paul is hovering above the tempest...

GEoD: the first interview of the new Duncan with the God. "Surprise
me, i would love to be surprised" (i think the quote is not from the
scene, but it remembers me the impression that i had on it, that He
just knew, even before you spoke...)

HoD: When Sheeana becomes a Bene Gesserit despite everything...

I'll think of some others if i find some copy of the books hanging
around (on travel right now...)

I love when the BG take possession of Sheeana after the botched attempt
on her life.

I'll pop into the library in the morning. I might ask someone to get it
from the shelf, though. It hurts my psyche to see the real Dune books
being defiled by the proximity of the trash "Dune" books. I will
eventually buy a replacement, though.....

Sam (that IS you, isn't it? If I am mistaken about that writing style,
kindly ignore this post):

I believe I have a First Ed. of HoD around here somewhere in the chaos; as I
have that, I could probably dig up an old ppbk of HoD if you need it. Let
me know, dear boy.

I appreciate the offer, but I've already bought a replacement
paperback. Mine are an odd assortment of various paperback editions.
Ch:D and now HoD are the new paperbacks. Dune is a 25th anniversary
paperback and the others are all old versions, some being held together
by prayer. And, yes, it is I, Sam.
