McKay, Samantha, and Jennifer are tropped in a big hole. They play a
contest in which they have to choose which of two guys to make out
with. To my astonishment, they mention Steve Colbert and Jon
Stewart!!!!!!!!!!

I had not expected characters in a science fiction series to be mentioning
contemporary comedians!

I think that is purposely done (and done well, imo). A writer had mentioned
that they would have grown up reading, watching or knowing about this stuff.
Remember when John attached his plane to a hive ship? His explanation was
that he'd seen it in a movie. LOL

There's always been a lot of mentions of contemporary things on SGA (and
sometimes on SG:1)--just last night's episode had Dr. Lee and Cavanaugh
(was his long braid missing?) discussing "Pearl Harbor" and Ben Affleck
(although Ben's name wasn't specifically mentioned). In the past Dr. Lee
has talked about the video game Warcraft (IIRC) too, which is apparently
very popular IRL.
