This is a good show, but the writers borrow too much from old Columbo episodes.

Well in the last episode I saw, "Mr. Monk Goes to School" he traps the murderer by telling him that he's going to bring a huge search team to look for a vital piece of evidence. The murderer gets scared and surreptiously finds the evidence the night before the huge search. Of course Monk is waiting for him to find it because it proves he knew where it was. That's a straight lift from the Columbo episode with Johnny Cash. In Monk the murder has to retrieve a pair of glasses, in Columbo he had to retrieve a parachute. And I think the Columbo writers took that from real law enforcement tactics. They rarely have cameras all around when they do it, though. :-) -- Later Kal -- --------------------------------------------------------- / / / / / This space for rent / / / / / --------------------------------------------------------- cwmorrow@gbronline.com 01-23-2004, 08:45 PM >And I think the Columbo writers took that from real law enforcement tactics. I don't think so. The courts have long held that police agencies can trick and lie to get information. The line between that and entrapment is a little vague to me. We have a little town here that has 'block-parties' on New Years. A couple of years ago, the police of that town sent younger guys (early 20s) to the streets with phoney drug material. These guys would sell it as real drugs to somebody, the police would then arrest him/her for buying drugs. It was their contention that as long as you thought you were buying drugs, you had committed the crime. The local courts seemed to agree. -- Later Kal -- --------------------------------------------------------- / / / / / This space for rent / / / / / --------------------------------------------------------- Peter Thompson 01-30-2004, 05:17 AM Hear Hear! I'm glad someone has finally brought this up. Don't get me wrong, the show is quite good but it needs an overhaul. I can't say I liked much about "Mr. Monk and The Three Pies." I saw that same premise on the Happy Days spin-off "The Ralph Malph Mysteries" back in 1983 . It was the exact same idea but in this episode it was the German rock band The Scorpions who were trying to find the pies. I'll go back and watch the RMM episode and see if the same guys wrote the Monk episode.
