When Monk resumes the second half of its second season in January,
Tony Shalhoub's OCD-afflicted alter ego will be without his trusty
sidekick. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Bitty Schram has been let
go for "creative" reasons. Although the split was said to be amicable,
there's buzz that a salary dispute may have been behind her exit. In the
meantime, Monk producers are looking to add a new female character, a
widow who works as a bartender. Interested actresses must be in their
thirties and be open to the idea of kissing Tony Shalhoub. From inside a
bubble.

My thoughts exactly. She as his other half made it funny. No more "Suck it
up" my favorite episode. They need to get a grip and give her the bucks.
The show will tank without her.

Other shows have survived changes in characters. So, too, can
Monk.

I wonder if they are going to turn it into an "assistant of the
week" type of rotation where every episode Monk has a new helper
to clash with.

If they ditch Sharona, it will fail. She makes the show with Monk, his
other half. Sharona is as funny as Monk. The lottery guy is just plain
annoying. The side kick stupid cop is another Sharona set up to be
humorous.

If she goes so do the ratings, I know I watch it faithfully.

I agree. The other co-works are good characters but could probably get by
without them. Sharona has become a big part of the show so I don't think her
shoes will be easily filled.
