Good News of the Week
I've watched two episodes of "Monk" featuring Traylor Howard as the
defective detective's new sidekick, Natalie Teeger (the show returns on
Friday, Jan. 21). Maybe it's because my expectations were very low
("Two Guys and a Girl" didn't exactly inspire confidence), but Howard
is quite good. She's no Sharona (could anyone be Sharona?), but Howard
is doing an admirable job in a difficult position and the show has
smartly made Natalie very different from the character she replaces.
Now for how the show explains Sharona's sudden disappearance? Well, I'm
not pleased (fret not, they don't kill her off). Monk's reaction to
Sharona no longer being part of his life is, of course, hilarious. But
Sharona deserved a better send-off.>>>

This was by TV Gal, who's very protective of the shows she likes.
"Monk" is one of those. I was heartened by the idea that Traylor
Howard might turn out to be ... adequate ... in the role.

I agree that Traylor will be an excellent addition to the show.
Although critics didn't like Two Guys and a Girl, it was an outstanding
show (now repeated on the WE channel) for its quick and sometimes sharp
witted humor. Traylor was quick on her feet and delivered well on that
show. I am glad she is back and on such a great show. It was always
fun so I look forward to more Monk now with Traylor Howard.

Might you site a single instance of sharp witted humor?

If she was so sharp witted how come she didn't make a quick witted
comment
to the white blood cell guy? If anything she seemed dull.

To be honest the Monk character never really interested me at first.
the whole concept about a neurotic detective just instantly bored me.
But once I finally watched an episode it was Sharona that hooked me in.
I think it was her reacting to his behavior that was funnier than the
actual thing. I guess it was her "normal" presence that made his
behavior awkward and more funny. Just watching him wander around and do
stupid stuff won't do it for me. The disappointing thing, if its true,
is that the whole thing came over a $$ dispute. She probably did ask
for more money, and she probably deserved it. I don't think the
creators of the show ever intended for her role to become as important
as it did. Maybe they were stubborn and couldn't accept Sharona's
importance in the show because their creative minds didn't plan it that
way. Its just something that happened, and they blew it over a few
bucks.

Bitty not only asked for more money, but she didn't show up for work
(e.g., the game show episode), and from all reports she had become very
difficult on set.

I believe actors should be generously rewarded beyond their original
contracts when their series prove to be successful, but the actors have
got to be pros, too.

I was pleasantly surprised by Traylor Howard's performance. She
delivered.

Is that the episode where several of the stars didn't show up?

All reports huh? What a hit job.

I really hate to say it, because I'd like to see Sharona back with
Monk,
but Bitty is better off not being on the show if back stabbers
associated with the show are disparaging her. Yeah, right ...
didn't show up ... difficult on the set. What sleaze!

Oh yeah, did we mention that we wanted a Boy Toy body for the part?

Howard is OK, I guess, but her character sucks.

All I know is that Bitty was the only one scheduled who didn't show up.
Not everyone (except for Tony Shalhoub) works every episode.

All reports I've seen have it that way. Do you have others? If so,
please post.

Actors don't like it when one of their company decides she's better
than the rest and attempts to hold up the producers for more money than
they themselves are getting. It puts the project in jeopardy.
Everyone on "Monk" knows that they can get several more years' worth of
steady work out of this project, just as they know that a major
recasting can sink the show.

> Oh yeah, did we mention that we wanted a Boy Toy body for the part?

You keep saying this, but I don't see anything "boy toy" about Howard.
She looks normal enough.

There were things I liked, things I didn't. For a first time out,
though, I thought Natalie worked pretty well. I liked the daughter.

I don't buy into the argument that she thinks she is better
than the rest because she asked for more money. She was in
front of the camera a lot ... From what I can tell Schram
got the shaft - but I don't know of an instance where she
whined about it.

The body thing is sort of important. Monk now looks like
hundreds of other sitcoms and now has a dime-a-dozen sit
com co-star instead of a character who was unique to Monk.

Anyway, Millard ... No hard feelings. We all have to move on....

However ... you write :

> There were things I liked, things I didn't. For a first time out,
> though, I thought Natalie worked pretty well. I liked the daughter.

Yeah, you're putting us on.
Big deal. She stood in front of a camera.

Maybe she is a total jerk in real life. I wouldn't be surprised. So
many actors that seem really cool turn out to be wife beaters and all
that. But even so, it seems like throwing the baby out with the
bathwater to me. So she missed work one day, threw some tantrums, asked
for more money. Give the little lady what she wants! Seems like they
could put up with a little attitude to save such a good show.

She stood in front of a camera and delivered lines in a pretty good
scene about her mother's birth control pills. She had other stuff at
the science fair. I thought she came off well, no matter how much I'm
not allowed to think so.
