View Full Version : Monk and the Traffic Jam (2/11/2005)
Richard Fangnail 02-12-2005, 02:53 PM This episode was okay but I couldn't believe that the two guys had
exactly the same cell phone. It was more hard to believe how the crook
accidentally switched them. You'd think the real paramedics would not
recognize the crook pretending to be one.
Also why would the woman truck driver have access to Monk's phone
message? Seems possible but silly.
Natalie has a nice rear.

What is this, the Nitpicker's guide to Monk?? ;)
Much improved episode overall. Several good guest spots, including Larry
Miller who was hilarious.
There was more good character development and we even saw some decent
scenes with the daughter.
And you know what? I like the Natalie character more than Sharona. I
know that's blasphemy in these parts, but I do.
Nigel Sellars 02-12-2005, 08:26 PM I
I think this was a really good episode for a number of reasons (and yes
the McGuffin of the cell phones might be a bit improbable, but it
worked and as plot devices go it was much more believable than those
used in other series.)
But I suspect this worked for a less apparent reason. I think (and I
may be wrong) that this episode was the first written exclusively with
the Natalie character in mind. The other episodes, including the one
introducing Natalie, actually seem like episodes originally written with
Sharonain mind but hastily rewritten to fit Natalie.
So why do I say this one seems to be the first written for Natalie?
Remember, the paramedic ploy of our villain? Sharona, being a nurse,
would have spotted that right off. The plot device only works because
Natalie is not a nurse.
This time, too, MOnk's powers of observation were used well and he
didn't seem like an idiot savant (as some people have complained.)
Oddly, not having Stottlemyre & Disher helped in this episode. Monk had
to convince the state trooper -- have Stottlemyre & Disher there would
have made that too easy.
Larry MIller's character also helped. After all here was a guy who,
though not having OCD, found he had a lot more in comojn with Monk that
with "normal" people.
A much improved episode and it shows the writers an still do some good
stuff. And remember, Monk doesn't have the budget that other, much
dumber, major network shows have.

Also, can you imagine Sharona in her microskirts clinging onto the
dumptruck. Down boys, I'm sure some of you would love to see it, but it
wouldn't have worked. So that's further evidence that it was written
with Natalie in mind.

Just finished watching the reshowing - wasn't excitied about seeing it
Friday night.

As soon as I saw the phone hit the ground I knew there'd be a mix up. Was
pretty impropable.

That was pretty weak too - not to mention jsut hauling the guy off behind a
vehicle to strangle him!

I noticed that.

Yes, but how logn can she hold her pee. Besides that, did anyone notice
where she was at the end? Did you realize she's still sitting back at the
care while Monk is in the patrol car and eventually Natalie ends up in the
truck. They're sitting there at the end talking about wrists and not once
does she say, Oh my god, where's my daughter. That is definitely improbable.

I actually did from the beginning. I thought she'd be a nice foil (said so
right here).
Anyway, besides Korn guest spot, weird husky female truckdriver sub-plot, no
real motive as to why the bad guy would kill the Enviro guy to begin with,
the improbable paramedic murder and subsequent non-notice, the infinite pee,
the missing daughter, and the cell phone mix up, I thought it was better
than the others - I thought the Trooper was a little stylized, but it was
nice to not have Stot and Dish there. It was also nice to see Monk's
detective powers back in action. Noticing the neutral, the windows rolled up
an no a/c were all brilliant things. That's what I've always loved about the
show.
Well,
not ready to give up on it yet.

The enviro guy got the construction site shut down. The bad guy had
some kind of financial stake in it.

The motive was probably that by the time someone else filed a lawsuit,
if anyone did so, construction would have been well underway. Although
you would have thought that it was the "E G G" group filing suit, not
the individual.
And, yep, nice to see a crime that wouldn't have even been detected as
being one if it weren't for Monk.
"Weird husky female truckdriver" was played by actress Diane Delano,
whose most memeorable role (to me) was as weird husky female officer on
Northern Exposure". Her grandfather (the hitherto unknown to me John
Merton) seems to have been in literally dozens of westerns.

Never mind all that. We're informed by Larry Miller's character that
cell phones don't work where they are, which is why Monk can't call his
pals at the SFPD. Then, minutes later, without anybody having gone
anywhere, the cell phones work. The murderer calls the dead guy's cell
in order to locate it, and he also *gets* a call from somebody at EGG.
Did somebody build a cell tower during the first commercial break?
And can a little girl really hold her pee for an hour? And whatever
happened to just running into the woods and baptizing a plant?
Sheesh.
