Does anyone know why they changed the theme over to the Randy Newman
song? Perhaps they thought everyone would like it. I like it okay,
except that I preferred the older one.

For some reason, my guess is that Disney bought USA, and since Disney has
Randy Newman songs in everything, they put it in Monk too!
I think everyone preferred the original - they made a crack about it on the
show one time, and it was presented in such a manner to make me think it was
Shaloub's choice and he wouldn't change his mind.
I think it's also representative of the dumbing down of the show - or,
rather, trying to make it appeal to mass audiences (at the cost of
alienating a few core audience members, they felt it worth the risk).
But these are only conspiracy theories. Sorry I don't have anything more
concrete.

NBC owns USA, not Disney. Thanks for playing!
The Newman song has been the theme for several seasons.

Ah yes like Jeff Beals theme ,you are smart
Like the Academy Award, Emmy ,Grammy winners theme and you are
responsible for "dumbing" down the show.
Let me shed some light on it for you, I can give you Tony's answer.
He and the producers thought the theme was too bouncy for the teasers.
Murder and mayhem followed by this light hearted little ditty.
They felt the the new theme fit the feel of the show much better than
the original
As for everyone preferring the original, what do you base that on?
A random poll, dialing friends up or some sort of scientific studyl?
The crack they made about the theme was on a spoof of fandom in Mr Monk
and the TV Star.
EC Smith NBC may own USA but Monk is produced NBC Universal
Television Studio in association with Mandeville Films and Touchstone
Television
