View Full Version : How did "Monk" get started?

I thought you had to have clout to start a new TV series. Tony
Shalhoub wasn't superfamous at the time, though they wanted Michael
Richards. Andy Breckman had only been a writer.

I wonder if the attachment of Richards got people's attention and then
execs saw how good the pilot script was, so they made it.

It's just USA - not like a real network... :-)

Michael Richards was attached to the project when it was at ABC. Now
just sit there a moment and think of Monk as played by Michael Richards
channeling Kramer.

Yeah. Right.

Barry Diller at USA saw how good "Monk" could be, and had it tweaked
and recast. Here's to Diller, who knew what he was doing.

Michael Richards would have been terrible if he were cast as Monk; the
show would have been off the air in six weeks. The only other actors
who I think could have pulled off the Monk role as well as Shalhoub
would have been Eugene Levy and John Turturro.

One of the few former Wings regulars to have a successful series.
And on the big screen, a reasonable character actor in The Siege
and MIB.
(One could cheat and use IMDB, but Shalhoub is what got me and my
better half watching the series in the first place, as well as about
the only thing that keeps us watching it.)

If you haven't seen him in "Big Night," keep an eye out for it. He was
also very good in "Galaxy Quest."

Okay, okay. I felt sorry for him that he had to be in that one, but it
was probably a pretty good paycheck, and at least he didn't get crushed
between two glass plates like that one from "Bicentennial Man." Embeth
Davitz, I think.

Hey I know I am biased but at least he was pretty good in 13 Ghost.
The scene with his wife's ghost was pretty good.
The script blew.I'll give ya that

I did enjoy the special effects. The "mechanism" was a little "hollywoody" -
something I'd see in Neverending Story for me. I'd say he didn't act badly,
it's just that he didn't have as much to work with in that film.
