View Full Version : Trek XI: Faran Tahir Cast as Starfleet Captain

For the Trek XI movie, Faran Tahir has been cast to play a captain of
some Starfleet starship (not the Big E, probably an earlier design).
The role is said to be significant; he has a stunt double to do his
stunt scenes. Unlike other captains like Stiles, he will not be just a
foil to make Kirk look better by comparison.

Faran Tahir is of Pakistani ancestry.

My take:
This won't be the first time we've had Middle Eastern characters in Star
Trek, but I think it's the first time we will have seen a Middle Eastern
starship captain. Right?

No. ST:TVH had the Middle Eastern captain of a Federation starship stricken
by the probe's transmissions.

He was Indian.
Go argue with Condi Rice about India being part of the "Middle East."

She didn't seriously suggest that India is a middle eastern country did she?

Inia and Pakistan were once the same country.
I'd say Snake's comment is valid.

And Bangladesh was part of it too (it was formerly known as East-Pakistan).
I wouldn't call Pakistan a part of the Middle East.

Me neither.
I'd call it Asia, or The Sub Continent.

Maybe it's part of the Mid-West?

It's generally called "South Asia", compared to Iran/Iraq/Arabian
Peninsula being "Southwest Asia" and Malaysia/Indochina being
"Southeast Asia".

Pakistan is a borderline (literally) case. It shares a border with
Iran, which is universally accepted as a Middle Eastern nation. It is
more properly a nation of South Asia, but an argument can be made,
since "Middle East" is so vague, that Pakistan be included.

Of course I won't. I do believe your identification is accurate.
