I got in an accident over there one time - hit and run - people
coming out of a bar. The cops said I was lucky they hit'n'split,
as they were likely picking up or dropping off drugs, and might
just as easily have shot me.

I was rear-ended in downtown Oakland in 2003 by 3 Blacks in a Ford
SUV. I was at a redlight, and they didn't stop. Just plowed into me,
my bumper came off. I was knocked out for a few minutes, and then my
truck creeped across the street. A city worker stopped me, and woke me
up. Those 3 guys insisted they plead NO CONTEST, but don't call the
cops. I ended up getting $10,000. I wanted over $20,000.

I'm guessing they must have had insurance. Sounds like your
lawyer was sleeping on the job. I've gotten better settlements
than that for a headache and a stiff neck, never been knocked
out. Ya gotta learn to milk it...

El Aye is where I found mine.
One trick is I always call him first, not my doc, and always use
the docs he recommends. So much soft tissue damage is subjective

My lawyer was lazy.....he just collected paperwork.
Now, this other guy....Gene Peretti, he got me $5000 for a torn vinyl
bumper. No real damage at all, but Gene called up the other driver and
made up some BS to get her to pay. I spent $8 on a vinyl repair kit at
Grand Auto to fix the tear. It was my 1988 TransAm vs her Porshe
911. She had no insurance.

Back home, if you have no insurance (or expired tags, or an
expired / suspended license) you are automatically at fault in
all accidents, no matter the circumstances. Their position is
that you shouldn't have been on the road in the first place.

Gene told me she lives up in Piedmont, drives a Porsche 911, and
doesn't have insurance. He didn't even take a % share of the $5000.
