Ever catch Fatherland with Rutger Hauer? I think you might like it.
The film's pretty good; it was an HBO Original Movie, IIRC......the book's not bad, either, but I liked the movie better.

One of the reasons I liked it was for the reason that Skwirl' was looking for... AH as a background to the story but not the focus of it. The actual story line is rather captivating and makes it easy to forget that it's an alternate timeline event.
