View Full Version : New TV Sitcom May Satirize Star Trek

"It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" masterminds Rob McElhenney, Charlie
Day and Glenn Howerton are "boldly going" to broadcast television.

The trio has inked a two-year overall deal with 20th Century Fox TV and
has landed a pilot order from Fox for "Boldly Going Nowhere," a
single-camera comedy.

Under the pact with 20th TV, McElhenney, Day and Howerton will develop
new series for the studio, but their services will be in second position
to their work on their quirky FX comedy, which has been renewed for a
fourth season.

In addition to the pilot, Fox ordered five additional scripts for
"Nowhere," which 20th TV will produce with McElhenney, Day and
Howerton's RCG, LLC and 3 Arts Entertainment. McElhenney, Day and
Howerton, who won't appear on the show, are exec producing with Michael
Rotenberg and Nick Frenkel.

"Nowhere," a high-concept comedy about what happens day-to-day on an
intergalactic spaceship helmed by a rogue captain, is based on an idea
by Adam Stein, McElhenney, Day and Howerton's assistant, which he
pitched to them in August.

At the time, the trio was busy editing the third season of "Sunny," but
they liked the premise.

"All of us grew up watching 'Star Trek' and other sci-fi series, and
they're always about these adventures," McElhenney said. "We thought a
great area to explore is what happens between the adventures, how the
crew members take care of daily routine stuff on the spaceship."

20th TV approached McElhenney, Day and Howerton about an overall deal
last summer.

"They are incredibly funny, smart, innovative creators who have done
fantastic work on "Sunny,'" 20th TV chairman Dana Walden said. "Also, a
lot of the our decision to make a deal was driven by (Fox's) Peter
Liguori's true passion for the three of them."

The deal was well underway when the strike began. During the work
stoppage, the trio took some time between picketing to ponder their next
career move -- whether to do a movie or another series. That's when
Stein's idea came up again.

After the end of the strike, as the pact 20th was being wrapped up,
McElhenney, Day, Howerton and Stein did some brainstorming, and then
McElhenney and Day sat down and wrote the first draft in two days.

The trio handed 20th TV executives the script for "Nowhere." Three days
later, they got a call from Fox entertainment president Kevin Reilly who
told them he was picking the project.

"They knocked out a script that completely leapt out of the pile,"
Reilly said. "It has Fox sensibility, it's very character-driven, it's
politically incorrect, it's an amazing comedy -- high-concept but not a
spoof."

McElhenney, Day and Howerton plan to begin prepping the pilot and
writing the extra five scripts in October, after they wrap
postproduction on the upcoming season of "Sunny." After that, they
expected to attach an experienced showrunner the project if "Sunny"
continues its run on FX.

"No matter what, our first priority is 'Sunny,' " McElhenney said.

But he and his cohorts are eager to launch other series, working with
other writers and directors.

"We have don't have a ton of time, but we have a ton of ideas,"
McElhenney said. "We feel we have the energy to expand and do other
things."

But...but...there has already been a dead-on Trek satire. No, I don't mean
"Galaxy Quest" (that was more of a spoof of Trek fans).

I mean "ST:V, The Final Frontier."

It wasn't *intentional* satire, but...

Can you say Homeboys in Outer Space??
They'll never come up with inspired casting like Jimmy Doohan as
"Pippen".
And more than half of Futurmas were Star Trek parodies, including the
ones that actually were Trek Parodies.

It certainly is a terrible thing that you were injured when young, and
had to grow up with serious medical problems as a result - along,
likely, with mockery by other children.

As for the merits of Star Trek: Voyager...

now I see why this thread has grown so much.

I liked the original Star Trek. It had a few subpar episodes, but it
had many great episodes.

After many years, Star Trek: The Next Generation came along.

It took a while for the cast to develop chemistry; the first couple of
seasons were often painful to watch. But the series was more
consistent than the original Star Trek; there were only a few awful
episodes. Unfortunately, there weren't many great ones either.

Then there was Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Sometimes good, but it
tended to be dull. At least it was critically acclaimed.

After that, Star Trek: Voyager. More fun to watch than the last few
seasons of DS9... even before Seven of Nine, Tertiary Adjunct to
Unimatrix Zero-One came on board. But all too often pointless. Still,
I did have a fondness for the episodes featuring Captain Proton.

Then there was Enterprise. They tried to recapture the original series
there in some aspects, and before the final season - which fans
generally acclaimed - I felt it wasn't quite as terrible as most
others did. But it definitely was weak, and the sometimes overly
blatant use of... glamor... to boost ratings clashed badly, at least
in my mind, with an opening title sequence that invoked the spirit of
genuine space exploration.

Finally, they're getting around to what fans have always thought of as
the ultimate crime, recasting TOS. But by now, they're partly safe,
since too many people have simply lost interest. But to be fair to
Paramount, greatness is something that strikes only every now and
then; it cannot be manufactured on an assembly line.

It is .. growing on me. In some ways, it is the opposite of TOS. It has
great special effects, and a great look to it. I just love the "busy-ness"
of that ship, the meticulous attention to detail. It looks like a ship, and
the interior of the NCC-1701 never did. The stories are better overall;
conspicuously missing are clunkers like Spock's Brain, Battlefield, and
Omega Glory. But, also missing are episodes like COTEOF and Balance of
Terror. And, also missing was the chemistry between characters. We simply
don't care about these people as much. I'm not sure why that is. But, over
time, these characters are winning me over.

It certainly is a terrible thing that you were injured when young, and
had to grow up with serious medical problems as a result - along,
likely, with mockery by other children.

Thanks, but I never had the seizures in front of other kids, thank God.

John Savard

I'm just curious to see if these young 'uns can pull off the illusion.
It'll either be very impressive, or a complete disaster. There is no
in-between, I'm afraid.

There was very little chemistry among the Enterprise crew. For one thing,
"Trip" started out doing a lousy impersonation of Bones. Huge mistake.
Jolene Blalock, a terrible excuse for an actress, was too robotic to even
play an effective Vulcan. Probably because "real" Vulcans aren't robotic -
they're repressive. The emotions are there, but being restrained. Blalock
didn't have the skill to pull that off. I thought Billingsley and Bakula
were the best actors on the show, but they didn't have much to work with
most of the time.

Although you and I may not share certain beliefs, my reaction to _one_
episode of Enterprise, I suspect, is one you might share in some
respects. I was among those who was very strongly critical of the
episode "Dear Doctor". I may not have religious faith, but I do have
a... traditional... view of right and wrong.

Here is my initial reaction to that episode -

but if you haven't seen it yet, I'll include a bit of spoiler space

Although this message was composed shortly after I viewed the
episode,
while it is fresh in my mind, I will be posting it tomorrow, after
those in the U.S. have had a chance to view the episode.

The episode is thought-provoking, and has a real plot. We learn about
the Denobulan culture a little, although only in tantalizing
glimpses.
We gain real understanding of Doctor Phlox as an individual, though.
I
don't know if some of what we've learned will help us to like him
more.

A TNG episode had a scientist disgraced for using an elaborate scheme
involving a holodeck to save a remnant of the people from a doomed
planet without contaminating their culture. This took the Prime
Directive to a ridiculous height; having to adjust to live in a
modern
technological society could indeed have condemned the people on that
planet to a fate like that of many indigenous people on Earth today,
but it's crazy to think they would be better off dead.

This episode doesn't take the Prime Directive - which isn't even
official yet - quite that far. But it certainly does take it far
enough to make Archer's choice in this episode ethically
questionable.
Not, however, clearly wrong.

However, if one is going to worry about an Enterprise episode being a
"bad influence" on people, I'd say episodes like this one are a
considerably more legitimate worry than having a 'gay character' on
Enterprise, or even the decontamination scene in the pilot. For
understandable reasons, though, people notice and make a fuss over
some things and not others.

There is a science nitpick in this episode.

It is indeed possible for a small population of a species to die out
through inbreeding. This, though, happens fortuitously. It doesn't
happen because Nature has a master plan to make room for some other
species.

I'd recommend the essays of Stephen Jay Gould as an entertaining way
of understanding what evolution really means. He is somewhat
embarrassed now by the essays collected in his first book, "Ever
Since
Darwin", but he has no need to be; while some of his views on
evolution are considered unconventional, they are actually quite
consistent with the basic theory of natural selection. The essays in
the first book present the conventional theory, and the later ones
sometimes note the facts - always acknowledged, but sometimes
overlooked and unrecognized - that he has reminded people of, which
has led to him being viewed as "unconventional". Such as the fact
that
evolution works on available genetic and morphological options, so
one
can't look at what is, or is not, adaptive in a given situation
alone.

So the basic premise behind the episode flows from a false
understanding of what evolution is all about.

Still, putting that aside, there is a basic conundrum.

Two races share the same planet. The Valaxians are dying out, from a
genetic disorder that Dr. Phlox, after great efforts, eventually
finds
a way to cure. The Menk, although treated benignly compared to groups
of humans in similar situations on Earth, is excluded from fertile
land, and earns its keep by laboring for the Valaxians.

And the Menk are evolving - some of them are showing intelligence and
talents incompatible with the (generally valid) view of them as less
intelligent and less evolved.

So their natural development will be stifled if Nature is not allowed
to take its course.

That does make a case for Archer's decision.

But his words, when informing Dr. Phlox of his final decision to take
his advice after all, "We're not out here to play God", highlight
what's wrong with his decision.

The ethical codes by which humans live by on Earth are clear about
one
thing.

Killing someone, choosing not to save a life when you can, *that* is
playing God.

Saving lives whenever and whenever you can is *never* playing God, it
is always doing what you are supposed to.

Thus, from the traditional viewpoint, a doctor only engages in
"playing God" when he turns off the respirator, never when he pursues
aggressive treatment. Of course, without bending that viewpoint too
much, we can recognize cases when aggressive treatment is genuinely
futile.

Of course, to *really* do the right thing, Archer really would have
to
"play God" in another sense. In the sense of micromanaging another
culture.

Because the "right thing" would have been:

We've got a cure, but it'll cost you. You've got to leave this
planet,
and let the other guys have it all to themselves. We'll supply the
ships and find the planet for you.

Of course, Archer doesn't really have that option, physically, in any
case.

By encouraging people to think of "playing God" in the opposite sense
to which this phrase has traditionally been used, though, can be
termed a 'bad influence'. So many guerilla movements and totalitarian
regimes were willing to sacrifice lives in the here and now for some
ultimate future paradise. Values that say that this is wrong, wrong,
wrong ought to be reasserted and reinforced, not eroded.

Incidentally, in another area, Dr. Phlox's comment about "the same
mistake the Vulcans did" implies Archer has valid reason for
resenting
the Vulcans - that they did, in some way, actively sabotage Earth's
warp development efforts, *not* merely withhold assistance.

(This keys into a story arc: someone noted that this episode
originally ended with Dr. Phlox withholding the fact that he had
found
a cure from Capt. Archer. This improves the episode in one sense, but
it creates a nitpick one can drive a truck through. If not
interfering
with the evolution on that planet is so important to justify letting
millions of people die, how can not letting Archer make his own
mistakes be even worse?)

Also, the episode gives us a nice dentist joke with T'Pol.

I'll give Blalock this she got better as the show did (see season 4) and she
seamed to be able to pull off the subtlety required. I'd agree with you
about Billingsley but Bakula's performance in this show seemed a bit wooden
(and I won't go into his constant pacing) maybe it was bad directing (and
for the first 3 seasons it was BAD writing) as Bakula was a helava lot
better in Quantum Leap.
All in all though ENT had more episodes (season 4 less two episodes, and a
small few in the first 3) I enjoyed than Voy did. (about 7, IIRC) I did like
the Voy based game Elite Force though....

I think the whole issue with the Vulcans .. all of them .. was the writing.
More even than that, the visualization. Berman and Braga decided to give us
genuinely emotionless Vulcans, and found out to their dismay the fans didn't
want emotionless Vulcans. So, in their mind, we must have come across as
hypocritical. "Stay true to the Trek canon!" we scream, and when they do,
we blast them for it .. Blalock is okay as actress; she's not Bette Davis,
but she pulled this off. Listen to her interview on the DVD's to see her
real personality, and when you do, you realize just how well she sold the
character of T'Pol ..

I recently watched the entire Xindi story arc over the space of about a
week, and enjoyed it immensely, though I think I still like season two the
best. I'm not one of those who cares for season four. Except for the
Mirror Universe first episode, and Terra Prime, it is pretty mediocre. The
Augments trilogy sucked; The Kir Shara trilogy sucked; the Romulan trilogy
sucked, except for The Aenar. The series finale really sucked. Storm Front
sucked, and .. well, you get the idea ..
