Base on info I got from another thread in another NG, I went to my
local library and found
_The Writer's Digest Character Naming Sourcebook_ by Sherrilyn Kenyon
w/ Hal Blythe & Charlie Sweet
Writer's Digest Books, 1994

While thumbing thru it I found this:

Jayne(Sanskrit) Victorious
also I found these:
Jayne(Hindi)Victory (almost the same)
Jayne(Hebrew) Gift from God

The bad news (for Jayne Cobb) they are all female names!

For Stargate fans I ran across these:
Jaffa(Hebrew) Beauty (?)Not the first thing that comes to mind when I
hear Jaffa
Woolsey(English) Victorious Wolf (??) a seriously misname character if
there ever was!
MacKay (Scottish) Son of Fire (?)Well he did destroy a planet(or was
it a solarsystem) once

For BSG fans
Starbuck(English) Star-deer, I guess a no brainer, but still whats the
origin behind it and what the heck is a 'star-deer'

I thought it was interesting and wanted to share it with you all

That's a translation using the two syllables of the name as separate
parts. In fact "Starbuck" is a contraction of a much older word,
which *isn't* "English". The original literal meaning is "From The
River Where Stakes Were Got" (a place name, which leads to it
becoming a surname, as people often were given the surname that
described where they came from).

Or a more modern, more poetic, meaning is "Challenger of Fate". NEVER
"star-deer".

There was Bambi, but I can't think of any other deer that have been the
star of a movie or TV show. ;-)

And Jane Doe, which is more appropriate. "John Buck" would make more
sense. ;-)
