I was lucky enough to get a look at the spoiler photos of the
shuttlecraft from the Trek XI movie, before Paramount's lawyers got the
photos removed from the websites.
I can't vouch for the authenticity of the photos. But if they're real,
then it looks like Abrams agrees with Cawley that TOS-compatible
productions should have a retro look, rather than a modern 2008 look.
The shuttlecraft cockpit panel even had toggle switches just like old
sci-fi from the 1950s and 1960s:

From what I read about the scene, the shuttlecraft was to be used by a
construction crew. That accounts for it's more utilitarian design.

I was referring to the controls on the cockpit panel, not to its
exterior look.

I thought the shuttle looked more like something you'd see in a Starship
Troopers type movie.
