Hi all,

What is Stargate (Directors Cut) like?
Is there any major difference between that and the original?

Cheers

Doesn't look like it's available in PAL format, only NTSC. So which one is
better? :)

So long as your DVD player can play Region 1 DVD's it shouldn't matter.

Different players can only play certain region DVD's - USA (NTSC format) DVD
players can't play European (PAL format) DVD's.
I thought everyone knew that.

No, I mean which is better the Original or The Directors Cut.
Aah whatever, I'll just get the directors cut, hey it's got six minutes
extra or something.!

Go for the directors cut. It's much better. It has all the original plus
the extra bits, which really should've been in the original to start with.
I think they make a big difference.

And anyway, it's worth it just for the line in the DC where Daniel says he
can get them back home...to which O'Neill turns to General west and says
"He's full of ****". Class.

Most DVD players can be easily converted to play all region DVD's. I've
bought plenty of Region 1 DVD's (USA) and played them on my UK DVD player.

What's the problem? Most good DVD players will play both PAL and NTSC.

Actually the DVDs themselves aren't PAL or NTSC (video tapes are, but
not DVDs).

DVDs are limited by "region" coding, meant to prevent UK folk buying
US discs, and vice versa (actually meant to stop everyone buying cheap
early releases from places like the Middle East) - but there are very
few DVD players in the UK that can't play all regions. If you got
one, you got ripped off - the little twenty quid ones from Asda are
capable of playing all regions. I understand that in the US it's not
so easy to get a "region free" machine.

Actually DVDs do come in PAL and NTSC versions as well as the silly
region coding. If you read the back of some DVDs it will say one or the
other. My DVDs for the Starship Troopers: Roughnecks animated TV show
specifically say "PAL" on the back, as do some of my DVDs.

If you go to somewhere like the Australian EzyDVD online shop, they
tell you on the information page what format the DVD is in.
http://www.ezydvd.com.au

But it is increasingly irrelevant since many players (DVD and VHS) and
TV sets can handle either PAL or NTSC, and DVD players with no region
locks are almost everywhere these days ... the exception seems to be
the US where the studios, etc. still try to hold on to their power.

Actually I don't think that's correct? Region 2 disks are region
protected and are PAL format. But some DVD players (and writers for
that matter) can be hacked to be region free and most of those will
convert PAL to NTSC and NTS to PAL.

Most DVD players don't need to be "hacked" these days. The discs may
be this region or that, but there are very few players on sale in the
UK that actually need to be hacked.

It's the same for DVD players and DVD/harddisk recorders here in New
Zealand and Australia (and Asia probably never bothered in the first
place), but it is apparently a very different story in America where
the studios and networks still rule the roost and so their DVD machines
are still mostly region-locked.

The DVD drives in many computers (and possibly games consoles) are also
still region-locked.

In some cases you can change the region-code of the drive, but often
the number of such changes is limited and if you change it five times
(for example) you're stuck with the last change "forever". You can of
course hack the drive's firmware to get around this too.

More specifically, in Australia the whole concept is regarded as restraint
of trade, so you just have to ask to get your DVD player region-free. So I
can watch anything on my TV. Annoyingly, this doesn't apply to my
computer, which I think gives an even better picture than the TV - no
lines.

Hmm. Is it illegal to try and import one of these DVD players into a
country like America?

That's not the point. The point is the DVD's ARE in PAL or NTSC - this
is seperate from the region encoding. You could encode a DVD as NTSC and
give it a Region 2 code.

Last time I travelled overseas the only thing customs was worried
about was poultry *grin* Signs everywhere asking if we had poultry
in our carry-ons! Bizarre

I have a friend in Germany and she and I send each other gifts all
the time. No one ever asks what I'm sending her or what she sent
me. I doubt anyone would care if you bought yourself one online.
