View Full Version : Alia's Folly

In Dune Messiah, the Duncan ghola is introduced to Paul and his associates.
A long conversation ensues. What are you called? Do you remember your
past? What is your purpose, etc. Finally, Paul concludes:

"Let your Tleilaxu name stand," Paul said. "Hayt--there's a name that
inspires caution."

The interview is obviously over and Hayt bowed and moved one step back.

However, Alia goes on and asserts:

"How did he know the interview was over. . . Did the Duncan Idaho in him
know?"

The question is this: Why did Alia overinterpret the situation in this way?

A two fold question. The easier part is that FH used this to further
his plot and the underlying tension that the ghola recollection and it's
mysteries causes. Alia asks this because it shows her nature and
foreshadows her own involvement with Hayt/Idaho later.

Do you think it suggests that Alia was sexually attracted to Hayt?

You betcha, Tones.
"How did he know the interview was over. . . Did the Duncan Idaho in him
know?" ............
A blind man could see, from that overinterpreted, steamy statement, that
Alia was gagging for it, the dirty hussy.
