.....Was evacuated around a period of nukewar.
Before the nukewar, it was way overpopulated, and dominated by the American
and Chinese civilizations.
Sometime, perhaps around the 22nd to 24th century, folks who could afford it
evacuated on sublight ships to the stars, to a new solar system, with
multiple terraformable planets.
More and more people got out of Dodge, but they still had not yet developed
FTL tech - perhaps Tyllium wasn't available for them to make that
technological advance.
In the end, the people of Earth nuked each other...but their descendants
still inhabit that faraway solar system....
Perhaps the humans of that system finally did develop some rudimentary form
of FTL, and a raggedy Firefly class boat accidentally wandered into a test
area (while on a job to steal some of that tech for a client), and wound up
on Caprica, which is why we saw it when Roslyn was getting her mammogram
results or whatever they call it.
Shiny.
